Ultimate Cat Exercise Wheels Guide 2026: Make Your Cat Move!

Cats that live indoors don't get to patrol territory, chase off intruders, or hunt for their meal. All of that exercise just isn't available to them anymore. The tradeoff is a safer life, but it also means a lot of indoor cats are seriously under-exercised. It shows up as extra weight, restless nights, and sometimes destructive behavior born out of boredom. Cat exercise wheels for indoor cats are the perfect solution!

Yes, like a hamster wheel, just built cat-sized! This is one of the few products that actually gives an indoor cat a real outlet to run. Not every cat takes to one right away.

And there's a genuine range of wheels out there depending on your cat's size, your budget, and how much space you've got. Below, we'll walk through why a wheel helps, how to get a skeptical cat on one, and then our 9 favorite wheels.

Cat Exercise Wheels for Indoor Cats

Why an Exercise Wheel Actually Helps Your Cat

Obesity is the most common weight-related health issue vets see in cats, and indoor cats are especially prone to it. Without territory to patrol or prey to chase, a lot of the movement a cat would naturally get in a day simply disappears. A wheel gives that missing movement somewhere to go.

Regular wheel use is commonly linked to a handful of real benefits beyond just weight management:

  • Better muscle tone and joint flexibility, which matters even more for older cats managing arthritis.
  • General cardiovascular health, the same way regular movement helps in any species.
  • Fewer destructive scratching sessions, since a lot of that behavior is really just excess energy looking for somewhere to go.
  • Calmer nights, with fewer of those 2 a.m. "zoomies" that come from a cat who didn't get to burn energy during the day.
  • Lower general anxiety, since a wheel gives your cat's stalk-chase-capture instincts a legitimate outlet they don't otherwise have indoors.

Two things worth knowing before you buy one. If your cat is a senior or has an existing health condition, check with your vet before starting wheel use — vigorous exercise can aggravate certain conditions. And if you have a flat-faced (brachycephalic) breed like a Persian or some Himalayans, a wheel may not be a good fit at all. Their airway structure often makes sustained running genuinely difficult, no matter which wheel you choose.

How to Train Your Cat to Use a Wheel

Almost no cat walks up to a brand-new wheel and hops right on. That's normal, not a sign you bought the wrong product. Most cats need a little time and the right approach to get comfortable. Here's a training process that shows up, in some form, across nearly every wheel on this list's own instructions:

  1. Introduce it unpowered first. Let your cat sniff around and investigate the wheel with zero pressure to actually get on it. A few of our picks below build this exact step into their own instructions — for example, some wheels ship with a locked, stationary setting specifically for this first stage.
  2. Build a positive association before asking for movement. Feed a meal near the wheel, or let your cat sit or lie on it while it's locked in place. The goal is just making the wheel feel like a normal part of the room, not a big scary new object.
  3. Lure, don't force. A wand toy, a laser pointer, or a trail of treats just inside the running track is the most consistently effective way to get your cat's first few steps onto the surface.
  4. Keep early sessions short, and end on a win. Several short sessions beat one long one, especially in the first week or two. Reward any voluntary interaction with the wheel, not just full-on running.
  5. Expect a real range of timelines. Some cats are running within days. Others take weeks of calm, low-pressure exposure before they'll commit. Both outcomes are completely normal.
  6. Never force your cat onto a moving wheel, and supervise the first several sessions, especially with kittens or with a wheel that doesn't have a locking or brake mechanism.
  7. Try catnip or silvervine on the running surface as an extra nudge. A lot of owners sprinkle it directly onto the carpet runway before a cat's very first exposure to speed things along.

If your cat genuinely never takes to a wheel, that's fine too — not every cat wants to run in circles, and that's worth knowing before you commit. Our guides to the best cat activity centers and best cat laser toys both cover other ways to get an indoor cat moving that might click better for a cat who never warms up to a wheel.

Our Picks: 9 Cat Exercise Wheels Worth Buying in 2026

We looked at wheels across the full range of the market — from budget-friendly metal frames to premium birch-wood builds — in sizes running from compact (best for kittens and smaller cats) up to extra-large wheels built for bigger breeds.

Every product below is grouped by budget tier, so start with whichever section fits what you're looking to spend, then narrow down by size and features from there.

Best Overall Cat Exercise Wheel

Star Cat Wheel, 41.7" L

Star Cat Wheel, Cat Treadmill, Exercise Wheel for Running, Spinning, Scratching, and Climbing for Indoor Cats, Premium Birch Wood, Eco-Friendly, Moving Fish, Wide Running Track, 41.7 inch L Size

If you want the wheel with the fewest tradeoffs, this is it. It carries the strongest cross-review sentiment of anything in this roundup, and its 176 lb weight capacity is by far the highest of any wheel we looked at, so it's built to handle even a large cat with plenty of capacity to spare.

This is our top premium pick for cat exercise wheels. The quality and standout chase mechanism described below make a real case for choosing it.

  • Rated up to 176 lbs — by far the highest weight capacity of any wheel in this roundup, with room to spare for a large cat or a household running more than one cat through it.
  • Built from E0-certified, low-formaldehyde birch wood using framing-fit (not glued) construction, which the brand markets as more resistant to warping over the long haul.
  • A built-in water-tube-and-floating-fish mechanism baits cats into chasing while they run, and it's specifically credited with getting reluctant cats to start using the wheel on their own.
  • A ventilated base and dual silent heels are built in for extra noise reduction, on top of a 15.7" wide running track that gives your cat real room to move.
  • Several reviewers who'd previously owned other cat wheels say this one holds up sturdier and runs quieter by comparison — the strongest quality sentiment of any pick in this lineup.
  • Assembly is the one consistent friction point. Plan on several hours solo, and multiple reviewers recommend watching the brand's own YouTube assembly video rather than relying on the printed manual, which several described as confusing.

The Easiest Setup

One Fast Cat Exercise Wheel, Gen. 7, 48"

If assembly dread is what's kept you from buying a wheel until now, this is the one to look at first. It's built from lightweight, snap-together ABS parts specifically designed to go together fast, and it's made in-house in Camarillo, California.

It's a genuinely solid pick for anyone who wants a large-diameter wheel without committing an entire weekend to putting it together.

  • Gives high-energy cats a dedicated outlet, right in your living room, that helps curb boredom and destructive behavior driven by pent-up energy.
  • The 48" diameter gives cats up to 25 lbs plenty of room to fully extend while running, not a cramped stride.
  • Snap-together ABS parts mean assembly typically takes under 20 minutes — one of the fastest builds in this entire roundup.
  • Choose between a foam or felt traction liner: felt holds up better against claws, foam is easier to wipe clean.
  • Backed by a 30-day risk-free return window, and the company recycles any returned units instead of just tossing them.
  • Reviewers are split on noise and stability. Most call it quiet and sturdy, but a real minority report squeaking or the wheel drifting to one side during use.

Best for Large & Wide-Bodied Cats

Nordic Beast 48" XL Cat Wheel

Nordic Beast 48'' XL Cat Wheel – Safe, Quiet & Stable Exercise Wheel for Large Indoor Cats up to 45 lbs – 15.7'' Extra-Wide Surface Fits 2 Cats Side by Side & Prevents Wobbling, 1-Year Warranty

At 15.7" wide, this has the widest running track of any wheel on this list — wide enough for two cats to share at once.

It's a favorite specifically among owners of larger breeds, and several Maine Coon and Savannah owners in particular call it well worth the money for a bigger cat that needed more room than a standard wheel offers.

  • At 15.7" wide, the running track is wide enough for two cats to share at once, a real plus if more than one cat in your house wants a turn.
  • Rated up to 45 lbs, and several large-breed owners specifically call it worth the money for a bigger cat.
  • Built from 9-layer solid plywood with a waterproof melamine coating, meant to hold up over years of daily use, not just months.
  • A velcro-attached carpet runway is gentle on claws, and a no-gap safety design helps keep paws clear of pinch points.
  • Comes with everything you need to build it: a screwdriver, instructions, an assembly video, and a feather-wand training guide, plus a 1-year warranty.
  • Assembly takes about an hour and the brand recommends using a power drill. Reviewers are split on how straightforward the instructions actually are, and a minority report chipped or cracked pieces on arrival.

Best for Multi-Cat Households

Homegroove Cat Exercise Wheel, 46" XL

Homegroove Cat Exercise Wheel for Indoor Cats, 46 Inch | Large XL Cat Running Treadmill Wheel with Carpeted Runway for Kitty’s Longer Life, Natural Wood Color(XL)

This is the highest weight capacity of any pure wheel-only pick on this list, at 110 lbs, which makes it a smart choice if you've got multiple cats who'll be taking turns on it. It's also one of the best-reviewed options in this whole roundup, with a large base of owners backing it up.

  • Solid-wood construction rated to 110 lbs — the highest weight capacity of any pure wheel in this lineup, giving multiple cats real headroom to share it over time.
  • Eight TPE rollers are built in specifically for a quieter spin, and the base is widened to wrap around the wheel for extra stability.
  • A narrowed gap between the base and the wheel, plus rounded corners, both reduce the risk of a pinched paw.
  • The built-in locking device lets you control play time, or shut the wheel down entirely when you're not around to supervise.
  • Ships with a detailed manual, pre-drilled holes, and a removable, washable carpet surface for easy cleanup.
  • Assembly runs long for some owners, with several reviewers reporting multiple hours (one cites roughly 115 screws). It also runs noticeably louder on hardwood floors than on carpet.

Clearest Assembly Instructions

Naviconvex Cat Wheel, 46" XL

Cat Wheel, 46" XL Large Exercise Running Wheels with Detachable Carpet for Indoor Cats

Assembly complaints are a running theme across this whole category, which is exactly what makes this pick stand out. Several reviewers specifically praise how clear the instructions and included assembly videos are, a genuine rarity in this space.

  • Rated up to 45 lbs with a 13.2" wide running track, and a narrow gap between the wheel and base is built in specifically to reduce the risk of a pinched paw.
  • Several reviewers specifically call out the clear instructions and helpful assembly videos, a real standout in a category where confusing manuals are a common complaint.
  • The detachable, washable running-mat carpet makes cleanup simple without disassembling the whole wheel.
  • Pre-drilled holes and included hardware are meant to make the build more approachable, on top of the clear instructions above.
  • Rounded edges throughout are designed to reduce the risk of scrapes during active use.
  • Several reviews measured the "XL" size smaller than its name suggests, closer to 43" outer / 39" inner rather than the roughly 46" implied by the listing. Confirm the actual dimensions fit your cat before buying, not just the model name.

Best for Kittens & Small Cats

JubiNatural 35.9" Cat Exercise Wheel with Lock

JubiNatural 33.9" Cat Wheel for Indoor Cats, 50 lb Capacity, Black | 36.2"L × 14"W × 34.4"H cat exercise wheel with 33.9" running diameter, safety lock, quiet rollers and scratch mat.

This is the most compact wheel on our list, built specifically with kittens and small-to-medium cats in mind. If you've been holding off on a wheel because everything else on the market looked oversized for your cat, this is the one to start with.

  • A compact 33.9" inner running diameter and 13" track make this the best fit in this lineup for kittens and small-to-medium adult cats.
  • TPE rollers paired with a carpeted runway are built in to keep noise down during use.
  • A sub-6mm paw gap is designed to keep paws safely clear of pinch points while the wheel is spinning.
  • The built-in, fish-shaped lock does triple duty: locking the wheel for introductory training, for cleaning, or for storage when it's not in use.
  • The brand includes its own step-by-step training method right in the listing, and structurally it's rated to 50 lbs, though the brand itself is upfront that comfortable fit depends more on your cat's body length and running posture than on load capacity alone.
  • Plan on roughly two hours for assembly with a second set of hands, and wheel responsiveness draws mixed feedback — some owners say it spins effortlessly, others say it doesn't turn as easily as they'd hoped.

Best Space-Saving All-in-One

5-in-1 Cat Wheel (CYlively), 41.3"

5-in-1 Cat Wheel,Cat Exercise Wheel,41.3" High Large Cat Wheels for Indoor Cats,Cat Treadmill Running Wheel for Indoor Cats with Silent Wheel,Cute Furniture Toys

If you want one piece of furniture to cover exercise, rest, play, and feeding instead of buying separate items, this is the pick.

It's less a pure exercise wheel and more a small cat tree with a wheel built into it, which makes it a genuinely space-efficient option for a smaller home.

  • Combines a running wheel with 3 jumping platforms, a sheltered "cat apartment" nook, and a built-in feeding-bowl area, all in a single footprint.
  • A genuinely useful pick if you want one piece of furniture to cover exercise, rest, play, and feeding instead of separate items, especially in a multi-cat household.
  • Eight TPE silent pulleys on the bottom shaft keep the wheel portion quiet, and sisal carpet lines both sides of the running surface.
  • Smooth, edge-banded, rounded-corner wood construction is rated to 44 lbs and backed by a 3-year warranty.
  • Multiple reviewers say it suits both kittens and adult cats, useful if your household spans different ages.
  • This is the one pick where value-for-money sentiment runs genuinely mixed rather than mostly positive.
  • A minority of reviewers report thin pressed-board panels cracking or hardware loosening within months, and some cats are initially frightened by the noise.

The Budget Cat Exercise Wheels Pick

GTPLAYER Cat Wheel, 40" Diameter, Metal

GTPLAYER Cat Wheels, 40" Diameter, Large Cat Exercise Wheel for Indoor Cats cat Treadmill Metal with Detachable Carpet & Teaser/Stickers, Ultra-Quiet Scroll Wheel with Latch, Safe and Stable, Grey

This is our budget-friendly pick, and it's also the only metal-frame build in the whole roundup — a real alternative if you're wary of wood warping or plastic cracking over time.

It's a smart starting point if you're not sure your cat will take to a wheel and want to test the waters first.

  • A heavy-duty, rust-resistant metal frame is the only non-wood, non-plastic build in this lineup, marketed specifically as an alternative to wheels that warp or crack over time.
  • The wide-stance trapezoid base sits on four full-contact feet for real stability. One reviewer even reported it held their own roughly 160 lb body weight without issue.
  • Several owners specifically like how the black-and-grey finish blends into their home's decor, rather than looking like obvious cat gear.
  • Comes with a starter kit — teaser wand, grooming gloves, and cat-themed stickers — to help get your cat interested from day one.
  • Backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 2-year free repair policy.
  • Several reviewers mention their cat was initially scared of the wheel and needed real patience and coaxing before using it. That's not a defect, but a training-time expectation worth setting going in.

Best Value Wood Wheel

VEVOR Cat Exercise Wheel, 48" Wooden

VEVOR Cat Exercise Wheel, 48 in Wooden Cat Running Wheel for Indoor Cats up to 28 lbs, Cats Treadmill with Carpeted Runway & Locking Mechanism, Quiet Kitten Sport Toys for Pets Fitness & Health, Black

If you want the look and feel of a premium wood wheel in a budget-friendly pick, this is a strong match. It's the largest wheel in the budget tier at 48" outer diameter, and it comes with a complete accessory kit to get you started right out of the box.

  • A 48" outer / 43" inner diameter with a 14" wide track gives most cats real room to run, and a 0.2" security gap is built in to guard against pinched paws.
  • TPE silent wheels plus noise-reducing holes in the base are both aimed at keeping the ride quiet.
  • Lock the wheel in place and it doubles as a stationary cat bed, useful if your cat likes to nap on it between runs.
  • Comes with a complete accessory kit: gloves, a screwdriver, pre-installed hardware, and a teaser stick for training.
  • Built from 0.5" high-density engineered wood panels on a wide base designed for stability.
  • Assembly feedback is genuinely split. Some owners find it very easy, while others, including one detailed review, report confusing or reversed instructions for certain parts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cat Exercise Wheels

Is it actually safe for my cat to use an exercise wheel?

For most healthy adult cats, yes. The main safety considerations are ones you should check before you buy: talk to your vet first if your cat is a senior or has an existing health condition, since vigorous exercise can aggravate some conditions.

Flat-faced breeds like Persians and some Himalayans often aren't good wheel candidates either, since their airway structure can make sustained running genuinely difficult.

Beyond that, supervise the first several sessions (especially with kittens), never force a cat onto a moving wheel, and consider a model with a locking or brake mechanism if you want an easy way to keep the wheel stationary when you're not around to watch.

How loud are these? Will one work in an apartment or disturb the house at night?

It varies quite a bit by product, and it's one of the most inconsistent things reviewers report across this entire category — the same wheel can get reviews calling it nearly silent from one owner, and reviews calling it too loud from another, depending on the individual unit, the floor surface, and how the cat runs.

As a general pattern, metal-frame wheels and models with TPE (rubberized) rollers tend to run quieter, and nearly every wheel runs louder on hardwood or tile than on carpet. If nighttime noise is a dealbreaker, look for a pick above that specifically calls out quiet-running feedback, and consider placing a rug or mat underneath the wheel regardless of which one you choose.

Can more than one cat share a wheel?

Yes, with the right wheel. Look for a wider running track and a higher weight rating if more than one cat in your house is likely to use it.

The Nordic Beast and Homegroove picks above both stand out here — Nordic Beast has the widest track in this roundup at 15.7", wide enough for two cats side by side, and Homegroove carries the highest weight capacity of any pure wheel we looked at, at 110 lbs.

How do I know what size wheel to get for my cat?

Match the wheel's inner diameter and weight rating to your cat's actual size, not just the marketed size name — a few "XL" wheels in this category measure noticeably smaller in practice than their name suggests, which we've flagged above where it came up.

As a general guide, compact wheels (under 40") suit kittens and small-to-medium cats best, while wheels in the 46"-48" range give larger or wider-bodied cats, like Maine Coons, enough room to fully extend while running.

My cat won't go anywhere near the wheel. What do I do?

That's genuinely normal, not a sign you bought the wrong product. Some cats take to a wheel within days; others take several weeks of calm, low-pressure exposure before they'll even step on it.

Go back through the training steps above: let your cat investigate the wheel unpowered first, build a positive association with treats or meals nearby, and lure with a wand toy rather than pushing or forcing. Catnip or silvervine sprinkled on the running surface can help too.

If your cat still isn't interested after consistent, patient effort, that's a real possibility worth accepting — not every cat wants to run in circles, and our guides to best cat activity centers and best cat laser toys are great alternatives for you to consider!

Do cat exercise wheels need to be plugged in or charged?

No. Every wheel on this list, and cat exercise wheels in general, run entirely on your cat's own motion — there's no motor, battery, or power cord involved. Your cat provides all the movement; the wheel just spins freely (or locks in place, on models with that feature) in response.

Is there a minimum age or size for a kitten to start using a wheel?

Most kittens can start once they're fully weaned, steady on their feet, and cleared by your vet for normal activity, though a very young or small kitten may do better starting on a compact wheel sized for smaller cats rather than a full-size 46"-48" model.

The JubiNatural pick above, at a 33.9" inner diameter, is specifically built with kittens and small cats in mind, and the same training process outlined earlier in this guide applies at any age — just keep first sessions extra short and closely supervised with a young kitten.

Wrapping it Up on Cat Exercise Wheels

A wheel isn't a guaranteed fix for every under-exercised indoor cat, but for a lot of cats it's the single best outlet you can give them for real, sustained running.

Start with the training steps above, pick a wheel sized right for your cat, and give it time — a cautious cat coming around slowly is normal, not a sign the wheel was the wrong choice.

17 Amazing Cat Trees for Large Cats 2026 (Buy Right Meow)

This post was updated in July of 2026 to reflect the latest options!

If your cats are anything like mine then they like to climb. A lot.  It is instinctual for all cats no matter their size. But when you've got big ones, like 20 pounders, climbing can be extra dangerous both to your furniture, and to your cat if they happen to slip or miss a jump!

So how do you keep them happy when you want them off things like your bookshelves and your furniture?

People might tell you to get a tree or get a condo. That’s a good idea. But if your cat is extra "fluffy" or extra large then you may have had trouble finding the right fit.

You can’t just go for any old furniture, you’ll want to find yourself a cat tree for large cats. Cat trees go by a bunch of names these days: cat climbers, cat castles, cat furniture, cat towers and so on.

I’ve sifted through countless options, several of which I've used myself, to bring you the best 17 big cats can actually use. So let’s get into them.

The Cat Castles

Best Overall

Hey-Bro 3 Level Large Capacity Cat Tower

Hey-brother Cat Tree Tower with Sisal Scratching Posts, Big Condo, MPJ020W | 53.7 Inches Multi-Level Cat House with 2 Bigger Plush Condos, 2 Platforms, Hammock, Toy Balls for Indoor Cats, Light Gray

Not going to pretend "Hey-brother" is a name that inspires much confidence, but don't let it scare you off — this tower earns its "Best Overall" spot with a huge review base and a genuinely solid step-style design that's easy for cats to climb.

It's built for large cats specifically, not just labeled that way as an afterthought.

  • Step-style multi-level layout makes it easy even for older or less agile large cats to climb without a big jump
  • Two enclosed plush condos give your cat somewhere private to disappear and nap
  • A padded hammock-style top perch is the prime real estate — expect your cat to claim it fast
  • Posts are wrapped in natural sisal rope, giving your cat somewhere satisfying to scratch that isn't your couch
  • Comes with anti-tip hardware and CARB-certified particleboard construction, so stability isn't an afterthought

An additional bit of info I managed to snag on this one from a current owner that I know at the shelter I volunteer at

“Definitely love this thing. I replaced my aging cat tree with it and my cats immediately took to it. It was easy to construct and has been plenty stable for even my big guy (20 lbs)."

Best for Big Cuddly Cats

The FEANDREA 2 Condo Tower

Feandrea Cat Tree, 33.1-Inch Cute Cat Tower, Plush Kitten Condo, Smoky Gray | for Adult Cats up to 15.4 lb, with 2 Sisal Scratching Posts, Cozy Perches, 2 Spacious Cave, Easy to Assemble, UPCT61G

Honestly, who names these companies? No idea what "Feandrea" means, but this is a genuinely solid pick for big, fluffy cats who want options.

It's a simple two-level layout, but the two condos mean your cat (or cats) will have their pick of the comfiest spot to log their 18-plus hours of daily napping.

  • Two enclosed cat caves — a roomy upper one with easy access, and a cozier lower hideaway good for older cats or kittens
  • A large top perch (~22" x 15.7") comfortably fits one big cat or two smaller ones snuggled up
  • Sisal-wrapped scratching posts built into the multi-level design
  • Comes with an anti-tip kit for extra peace of mind
  • Plush fabric that's easy to clean with just a lint roller or a vacuum pass
  • Quick to put together with universal screws and clear instructions

Gathered a quote from another friend in the cat world on this one:

“My older girl is starting to have a hard time getting around and this was perfect for her since she's definitely a bit fluffy. Keeps the risk down given the height is low, but she loves it!”

Multi Cat High Perch Option

Globlazer Heavy Duty Cat Tree, 70 inch

Globlazer F70 Pro Heavy Duty Cat Tree Tower for Indoor Cats Large Adult | 70in Sturdy Extra Large Cat Tower with Scratching Post, Cat Condo for Adult Cats Kittens, Hammock, Padded Perch, Light Grey

At 70 inches tall, this one gives your cats plenty of vertical territory to fight over — er, share.

It's a newer entrant, but it's already performing really well based on everything reviewers are saying, definitely a worth option to consider.

  • An enlarged square hammock is actually sized for an adult cat to stretch out flat, not just perch on the edge
  • A fully enclosed condo gives your cat a private hideaway
  • Four sisal-wrapped scratching posts plus a dedicated scratching board
  • Two separate climbing paths mean less territorial disputing in multi-cat homes
  • A large, removable, washable top perch — genuinely underrated once cat hair builds up
  • Owners consistently describe assembly as easy and the finished tower as notably stable, not wobbly

Best for Senior Cats

Yaheetech Cat Tree for Indoor Pets

Yaheetech 36in Cat Tree Tower with Large Perch for Senior Kittens | Sturdy Wood, Low-Entry Condos & Ramp Ease Senior Joints, 3-Tier Play-Nap for Kittens to Adults, Anti-Tip Strap Included

Not every big cat is a young, agile cat. This one's built with older cats in mind, and it's compact enough to fit a smaller apartment without eating the whole room.

Perfect if you have two older ladies like my Lexi and Beast at age 14!

  • Low-height condos and a gently sloped ramp make climbing much easier on senior or less mobile cats
  • Three-tier layout that gives plenty of room without towering over your space
  • An anti-tip strap is included standard, not sold as an add-on
  • Two enclosed plush condos plus a foam-edged perch
  • Sisal-wrapped scratching posts and a lower scratching board
  • A dangling toy ball on an elastic band for cats who still want to play

One additional thought I was able to find from another owner:

“We love this for our big guy. We used the anti tip strap and locked it into a stud since he is young and LOVES to jump around. It's stayed nice and stable even when he jumps off the top!"

3 Sky High Perches

SHA CERLIN 81 Inch Multi-Level Tall Cat Tree

SHA CERLIN 81in Multi-Level Tall Cat Tree Tower for Indoor Kitties/Larger Cat Condo Furniture with Hammock/Cozy Pussycat Perches/Sisal Scratching Posts/Pet House/Wide Base/Grey

If your cat likes to survey their kingdom from up high, this is your pick — 81 inches of climbing tower with widened top perches and roomier condos.

Almost like your cats are going for your ceiling, or your roof...who knows sometimes? Mine end up on top of the cabinets frequently enough.

  • A wide, heavy-duty base specifically engineered against tipping
  • Rated to support cats up to 33 lbs
  • Widened top perches and larger condos for bigger cats to actually stretch out
  • CARB-certified particleboard construction with sisal-wrapped reinforcement posts
  • Tools and instructions included, setup consistently described as easy
  • Reviewers specifically call out stability as a strength here — a good sign at this height

The Tallest of the Bunch

Allewie 81 Inches Tall Cat Tree

Allewie 81 Inches Tall Cat Tree/Multi-Level Large Climbing Tree House and Towers for Big Feline/Condo and Hammock/Scratching Post/Wide Base/Grey

An equivalently tall option as the last one at 81 inches, with enough stacked levels that more than one cat can use it without constantly bumping into each other.

A couple of key items worth noting on this model:

  • Reinforced padded base plus an included anti-tip strap
  • Rated to support up to 55 lbs combined — built for multi-cat households
  • Two perching platforms, two enclosed condos, one oversized hammock
  • Plush fabric and sisal surfaces balance comfort with scratching space
  • Assembly generally described as straightforward, and it doesn't need power tools
  • Honest note: Grey colorway has occasionally shown longer shipping windows (4-5 weeks) — check current stock before committing to that color

Zero Fuss - Lots of Space

NewCatCondos Tower with 4 Perches

New Cat Condos 190209 Large Cat Tower with 4 Easy to Access Spacious Perches,

If you finish reading the entire article you’ll probably think that New Cat Condos has paid me for plugging them so often, but they just make amazing products that deserve to be all over the list. I really couldn’t find anything better so I’m sharing them with you!

It is almost like they are the Big and Tall of cat furniture! Who knew that existed?  This one's their tallest standard option at just over 5 feet.

  • Five total levels give your cat plenty of places to spread out
  • Each of the four raised perches is 17" in diameter — real room, not a token ledge
  • As with every New Cat Condo this option is made from solid wood meaning great durability
  • It also uses plush household grade carpet for extra comfort for your feline friend
  • You’ve a big chunk of high quality sisal rope available for scratching from the ground floor
  • This model requires a bit of assembly because nobody wants a 5 foot tall package in the mail

  • It is made of solid wood, plush household grade carpet, unoiled sisal rope and sonic tubes
  • It is fully hand crafted in the United States of America

The last thing I'll call out is that this is by far one of the more pricey cat trees on the market. But it comes with unbeatable quality and is incredibly unique. It is up to you if you're up to invest in it!

Worth flagging: a number of other reviewers report parts loosening or breaking over time — a more pointed concern than most other picks we've mentioned here today.

Climber Focused

PrestigeCats Large Staggered Cat Tower

Prestige Cat Trees 130098-Neutral Staggered Cat Tower Cat Tree, Large

If you’re looking for simplicity and you’re a little bit lazy (like I am) then you’re gonna love this option from PrestigeCats. They are bringing you a near fully assembled product that’s takes seconds to prepare out of the box. Talk about convenience.

On top of this you’re getting a very simple and straight forward cat condo that will have your cat lazing about the minute the box opens. They might even go exploring in the box after the box after their first nap.

Quoted from one owner I managed to talk to on some cat forums:

“I have a 20 pound cat who can fit on the top comfortably!”

Key features worth noting:

  • This model is made from solid wood meaning it is extra sturdy
  • It also uses plush household grade carpet for extra comfort for your feline friend
  • You’ve got an awesome scratching section built into the support post that has high quality sisal rope
  • It is specially designed for larger felines and households with multiple cats
  • The specs are as follows: 20″w x 20″d x 46″h (tons of room for big cats to laze about!)
  • It is handcrafted in the USA and ready to use right out of the box coming from a company that got its start in an Arizona garage

Worth flagging: Carpet quality/durability reviews run a bit mixed. So if you have a real scratcher or chewer on your hands you might want to consider an alternative.

No Assembly Required

New Cat Condos Premier Triple Cat Perch

New Cat Condos 110029-Brown-Parent Premier Triple Cat Perch, Large, Brown

New Cat Condos specializes in making high quality cat furniture that requires zero work from your side.

This is a fully assembled product that’s ready to use out of the box. You can’t ask for much more than that when it comes to online ordering!

This model brings a level of simple luxury you just won’t find elsewhere.

And you’ll have your cat lazing about the minute the box opens. You won’t even need to keep the box for your cat to be entertained.

Some other quotes I tracked down from owners of this product::

“I was concerned about the size of this as my guy is nearly 20 pounds…but it hasn’t seemed to stop him from enjoying it.”

“We have two Maine Coon cats and both are typical large cats. The platforms takes their weight individually and together without any problems and with no stability issues.”

Key features worth noting:

  • Made from solid wood this model is extra sturdy compared to other models
  • It also uses plush household grade carpet for extra comfort for your feline friend
  • You’ve got two great scratching sections built into the support post that each have high quality sisal rope
  • It is specially designed for larger felines and households with multiple cats

High Height & Extra Stability

New Cat Condos Large Cat Playground

New Cat Condos 190113-Neutral Color Solid Wood Large Cat Playground, Neutral, Large

Another amazing product from New Cat Condos is their large cat playground.  If you’ve checked out the other items from New Cat Condos you’ll notice some similarities to the Large Cat Playground.

The differences are small, but if your kitties don’t like to stick their head off ledges while they sleep then this model will be a better choice.

It doesn’t have the same dips in the edges of each perch meaning it is perfect for curling into a ball for a nice nap.

  • This option has a total of 5 levels (including the base) for your cat(s) to enjoy
  • Each of the raised levels has a 4 inch lip and is 17 inches in diameter
  • Made from solid wood means it’ll withstand any beating cats can throw at it
  • New Cat Condos uses high grade carpet for an extra comfy feline experience
  • There’s a great scratching area wrapped in high quality sisal rope
  • The specs are as follows: 24″w x 20″d x 64″h
  • This model requires some elbow grease to put together because nobody wants a 5 foot tall package in the mail if they can avoid it

Most honest caveat on the list: several owners describe the carpet wearing down within a few weeks of regular use — still solidly rated overall, worth knowing if carpet longevity matters most to you. Especially since NCC does tend to carry a premium price tag.

Perfect Window Gazing Height

New Cat Condos Premier Cat Scratch and Lounge

New Cat Condos Premier Cat Scratch and Lounge, Beige

Oooooohhhh baby. A cat lounge. Seems swanky right? I bet they would love to be served food and drink right up on that top level!

This is another New Cat Condos option that shows up at your door ready to use, no assembly required.

Your cats will impatiently wait for it once you hit the order button. You big cats will be extra impatient.

Directly quoted from another owner I tracked down:

“I have 2 indoor cars. One weighs almost 20 pounds – he is a big kitty. A tall condo just wasn’t a good fit. This one was perfect.”

“It could hold two cuddling kitties easily and more than adequately holds our 18 lb bruiser.”

So what’s worth noting before you do hit that order button? Check out these features:

  • This option has a total of 3 levels outside the base for your cat(s) to enjoy
  • The 2 lower levels are designed in half circles to give your kitty a hug like feeling while relaxing
  • It is made from real solid wood, not particle board or pressed wood
  • New Cat Condos uses high grade carpet for an extra comfy feline experience
  • The specs are as follows: 20″w x 20″d x 32″h

Key flag worth highlighting: Some owners note the carpet sheds over time — mild, mixed signal, not a dealbreaker for most. That said, any cat that's dedicated is going to tear up your carpet and that's what a cat castle is for realistically.

Compact and Stable

New Cat Condos Large Feline Play Perch

New Cat Condos Large Cat Play Perch

New Cat Condos is the king when it comes to high quality cat furniture that requires very little assembly.

This product comes to you in the mail and it is ready to use out of the box. You can’t ask for much more than that when it comes to online ordering!

This model is a simple and straight forward three level luxury cat castle. You’ll have your cat lazing about the minute the box opens because you just have to set it where you want it. You won’t even need to keep the box for your cat to be entertained.

  • No particle board here, it is made from solid wood for added durability
  • It also uses plush household grade carpet for extra comfort for your feline friend
  • Two sisal rope scratching sections right into it for when your fur ball needs to sharpen her nails
  • The specs are as follows: 20″w x 20″d x 32″h (tons of room for big cats to laze about!)
  • It is handcrafted in the USA and ready to use right out of the box

he closest thing to a genuine cat palace on this list — 8 levels for multiple large cats to climb and claim territory. There's arguably too many options with this thing!  Your cats might take days to finally sleep on all the different spots...

There are a bunch of key features worth noting:

  • A wide horizontal scratching pad on the base, plus 7 sisal-wrapped vertical posts
  • An oversized hammock and extra-spacious condo, sized for larger-breed cats
  • Sturdy, thick base construction for extra stability

  • The quality is unbeatable, all parts are glued directly to the wood so even if your cat scratches or tugs the sisal or the plush fabric off in one spot the rest will stay firmly attached

Heavy Duty (for Max Weight)

CozyCatFurniture Tower & Huge Condo

Cat Tree for Large Cats with Two Hammocks, Huge Condo and XXL Bed on Top

CozyCatFurniture has a bunch of products specifically designed for larger than life cats.  If you’re looking for a great piece of cat furniture then you should definitely consider something from CCF.

This particular model is ideal for big kitties that want to climb and chill out. There are tons of positive references from other owners of extra fluffy cats:

“The beds are about 15″ wide and 5 1/2″ deep. My large cat(19 lb.) loves the beds.”

“Sturdy, well made, my fat & large cats fit in it and LOVE it.”

“Our very large cats love it and fit very comfortably in it.”

There are a bunch of key features worth noting:

  • A thick 2" baseboard specifically designed to resist wobble under multiple large cats
  • Nine oversized (5" diameter) sisal-wrapped scratching posts
  • Two large hanging hammocks (18" diameter) plus a spacious enclosed condo with a cushioned pillow
  • A large cushioned top perch so if they do the work they get a place to snooze
  • Built specifically for large-breed cats — Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Bengal-scale

Key flag worth highlighting: Persistently low stock (as few as 2 units) across multiple checks — small-business seller, confirm availability before you hit the buy button so you don't end up waiting weeks for the thing to show up.

Additional Information

Common Q&A on Cat Castles

Why Should You Get a Cat Tree?

cats love sleeping in high places

There are a bunch of reasons you should get a cat tree for your cat. What it really comes down to is that it is a place for your cat to call their own. This brings a bunch of benefits for both you and your cat:

  • A High Place to Climb & Sleep: Cats love to get up high and sleep. Cat trees provide an excellent vantage point for your cats up off of the floor. This mean they’re less likely to get on your furniture and thus less likely to damage it.
  • Something They Can Scratch: Any cat owner knows that cats will instinctively scratch and you can’t easily stop it. The best you can do is redirect the behavior. Cat castles are designed to be scratched, talk about a perfect fit! If you need an additional item, I love the Pioneer Pet Scratching post, my full review of it is here.
  • Something They Can Get Fur On: Finding fur on every piece of clothing you own and every piece of furniture you sit on can be frustrating. A cat tree for large cats will ensure more of their fluff stays in one place so it is easier to clean up.
  • Designed for Durability: Cat trees are designed to withstand the day to day lives of cats. Most of your furniture is designed for looks and comfort. If you want something that won’t be easily destroyed by your cats then this is the way to go.

How Much Room Do They Take Up?

Cat trees in general are rather space consuming, especially when you look for models that are designed to accommodate larger felines. That being said, there’s no need to get one that will take up half a room.

Plenty of the options above are only about 20″ x 20″ at the base level. This is smaller than your average armchair in your family room and will provide the perfect spot for a cat to hang out and stay off the furniture.

Now there are absolutely gigantic options as well. The Buckingham Palace by Kitty Mansions for example is absolutely monstrous. But 99.9% of cat owners have no need for a cat castle like this. Actually, 100% of cat owners. But who buys stuff they need anymore? If you want to check it out on video....

The short of it is that you can get a tower your cat will love and it can easily fit in almost any room in your home.

You should also pay close attention to the height of some of these towers. While most homes these days have over 8 foot ceilings (96 inches) there are a few that are right up there in that range. You wouldn’t want to buy something that is touching your ceiling if you’re in an older home with 7 footers.

Are These Things Really Safe for Large Cats?

A lot of cat castles will get wobbly or risk tipping over if multiple cats or a large cat gets on top of them. The models listed in this article are hand picked to ensure that won’t be the case.

There are a few ways this instability can be compensated for. In several of the models above it has been handled by using extra high quality components that are already heavy and thus won’t move around easily.

The other major way this can be handled is placement of the castle. Cat castles should be placed in a corner where the castle can’t easily be knocked around. Corners also ensure there are only two ways for it to tip or rock instead of three.

Last but not least many cat castles come with stability straps. If the model you choose doesn’t come with one you can easily fashion one yourself with some rope and an eyelet drilled into a stud in your wall. Extra weight can also be placed on the bottom floor.

It is worth noting that cats can fall off a completely stable cat castle, even while sleeping.  If your cat does happen to fall while sleeping you should definitely take them to the vet ASAP to ensure they aren’t injured in any non visible way. Check out this article from the ASPCA for more details.

How Long Will They Last?

Cat trees in general tend to be built out a lot of press board and reinforced cardboard tubing. While this makes a lightweight and easy to ship/construct product it doesn’t tend to last as long. Especially once cats are jumping all over it shaking screws loose.

The good news is that most of the cat trees that are specially designed for extra fluffy kitties don’t use these components. They are engineered to withstand bigger cats so they are built of solid wood and rarely require much on site construction.

A good cat tree should easily last several years at a minimum, and if you purchase a version made of solid wood materials that ships fully constructed it will likely last 3-5 years without any issue.

Are They Easy to Assemble?

allen wrenches

I’ve put together numerous cat trees in my day and for the most part they are pretty simple to assemble. They generally come with simple directions and the tools required to put them together.

Several of the models included above also come fully assembled or may simple require a attaching a single piece.

Most of the pieces for CozyCatFurniture and New Cat Condos require little to no assembly because they ship fully constructed.

Most often the only tool required is an Allen Wrench or Hex Key (see the picture for an example).

Sometimes you might need to get a screw driver or a drill to speed things along. If you hate construction work I’d recommend ordering one that is ready to go out of the box.

Will a Castle Keep Them Off my Furniture?

The short answer is somewhere in the middle of yes and no. The longer answer is that you’ll have to do some work to get the castle to keep cats off of your furniture.

Cat trees do provide a great alternative for cats to get up high and sleep, but that doesn’t  mean they’ll   stay off other high or comfortable places. It will likely help decrease the time spent in those places right off the bat though.

If you really want to keep your cat off of specific pieces of furniture you’ll need to spend some serious time and effort. You can deploy lots of strategies to keep cats off of certain pieces of furniture.

Similar strategies are often used for keeping cats off counters. You can check out this article to see common strategies to help deter cats from getting on furniture and counters.

Why Won't My Cat Use Their Cat Tree?

It happens more than you'd think, and it's rarely because the tree itself is bad. Common culprits: placement (cats want to be near the action, not a forgotten corner), new-furniture smell (fades in a week or two), or simply being new and suspicious.

You can try to move things along a little with catnip/treats on lower platforms, familiar bedding on a lower level and letting them approach on their own schedule. Whatever you do, don't keep forcing them onto it or setting them on top, it'll just freak them out!

Give it a couple of weeks before assuming it's a bust.

Should I Anchor My Tree to the Wall?

Under ~60", most picks here are stable enough on their own with correct placement (e.g. in a corner, at a minimum against one wall). Past that height, anchoring is a genuinely good idea.

From personal experience: I've had a traditional, lighter-weight cat tower actually tip over on me in real use — not hypothetical, it happened. Fortunately it was when Beast was young and she just hopped off, no harm done. But it certainly convinced me that I needed to be smarter about how I placed my cat trees in the future.

Taller trees have a higher center of gravity, and it doesn't take much to set one rocking. Use the included anti-tip strap if your pick has one (most taller ones here do); rig your own with strap/rope + a wall-stud eyelet if not. Be sure to use the included dry wall anchor or mount it into a stud.

If you need to fill in a hole after you can use some dry wall patching or even in cases of smaller holes some toothpaste and some touch up paint.

How Do I Clean & Maintain My Cat Tower?

A weekly vacuum of carpeted/plush surfaces, a lint roller for touch-ups, and an occasional brush-through on sisal posts covers most upkeep. Pet-safe fabric cleaner (light hand, don't soak particleboard) handles stains.

For heavy shedders or multi-cat households, a good vacuum makes a real difference — see my picks for the best robotic vacuums for pet hair and the best vacuums for cats if fur buildup is a recurring issue.

Wrapping It Up on Cat Trees For Large Cats

Cat castles are an awesome way to kill a lot of birds with just one stone. They bring a ton of things that cats want all in one package:

  • A high place to look down on humans from
  • A comfy spot to sleep in the sun
  • A great item to scratch until their heart’s content
  • Hanging toys to swat at for fun

There’s really no reason you shouldn’t get your cat their own tower. You just need to make sure you choose the right option for your cat.

And when you’ve got a big cat it is even harder to find something that will fit the bill. The good news is there are a bunch of cat trees for large cats that have been specially designed to ensure they are extra stable and extra durable..

The Fat Cat Backpack Review

The Fat Cat Backpack Review – Updated for 2026

This post was updated in July of 2026.

If you've got a relatively large cat and you don't like traditional carriers then the Fat Cat Backpack should be a serious consideration for you and your feline friend. Even if your cat isn't large, it is still an excellent option, just extra room.

Anyone who reads StuffCatsWant consistently knows that I've been working Lexi and Beast up to being Adventure Cats, but they are certainly not as adventurous as I would like. Not yet at least.

But that hasn't stopped me from continuing to take them on lots of expeditions and slowly acclimating them to the outdoors! So check out the table of contents below or watch the Video Review.

Where Have Our Cats Gone In It?

Lexi and Beast are both very interested in the outdoors, but they're also massive scaredy cats. Usually a loud noise or just an unfamiliar sound will cause them to run right off of our patio and back into the house.

Because of this they usually only go outside when fully harnessed and leashed, but it can be a hassle to take them far like this. That is, unless you have a killer bubble backpack for them to take a ride in!

The Fat Cat Backpack has been great for all sorts of outings in Chicago:

  • We've taken them on numerous trips to the grocery store which is about a 1.5 mile round trip
  • We took Beast on a 15 mile bike ride to go buy an ottoman for our office, she loved it and the staff were huge cat fanatics that were happy to meet and pet Beast
  • Trips to the veterinarian are routine in our household, the fur balls need their check ups
  • They've both also been on numerous walks just to go and sniff the fresh air
  • They've even gone on a walk through the Chicago Zoo to check out the other animals
  • A trip to a restaurant with a patio where they can chill inside the carrier and sniff
  • They've been on trips to the Lake Michigan beach front to relax and hear the birds chirp

What's It Look Like In Action?

This is a quick set of pictures we gook of Beast before we took her on the above mentioned 15 mile bike ride. First and foremost we had to get her leashed and harnessed up Check out those little toe beans!

Beast getting harnessed

Then we got ready to go ourselves, so Beast had to chill out in the backpack for a few minutes and wait at the front door on the rug...She was busy looking around wondering when we were going to leave...

Beast waiting to go on an adventure

Then we stopped in the park for her and gave her a few treats to convince her to come out. She mostly stayed inside the carrier though because there was a lot going on in the area we stopped in...

Beast relaxing in her carrier at the park

But she did come out for a few minutes just to explore, as soon as we flipped the Fat Cat Backpack back up vertically she decided to climb it to find her way back in.  Apparently she finds it to be a pretty cool safe spot!

Beast climbing back into the Fat Cat Backpack

Then once we popped off our bikes we had to walk a bit so I snapped a few extra shots of the pack in use so you get an idea of what it looks like from all angles.

The Video Review

I've also got a comprehensive video review for those of you who like to see things in action a little bit more. You can check it out here. If you do find the video helpful please do subscribe so I can keep making more of them!

Major Features Worth Calling Out

  • Rated by the manufacturer to hold a cat just under 25 pounds comfortably.
  • Tons of space inside for your cat to sit or lay down and even spin around.
  • A boat load of ventilation: top vents, 2 side vents, 3 front vents and vents in the bubble.
  • Built in safety connector for your cat's harness or leash to hook on to.
  • Padded adjustable shoulder straps and a chest strap for a more stable ride.
  • A removable lambswool interior base, comfy, but super easy to wash.
  •  Rubber feet to keep it from sliding on wood or tile floors.

Considerations For This Bubble Carrier

  • There's only one top entry point available for you to get your cat inside. If your cats don't like being 'put inside' a carrier then I've found simply laying the bag down and placing treats inside convinces mine to walk in on their own. But if your cat isn't treat motivated there aren't side doors. You could also check out alternatives in my Best Cat Carriers post.
  • Switching out the vent for the plastic bubble can be a bit of a hassle (true of every model with a bubble I've used to date). I do have a short YouTube video on how I did this for other backpacks. The process is the same so feel free to check that out. If you want the specific video the manufacturer also has one here.
  • If the bubble is in place you definitely can't use this carrier on a plane. Even if you take the bubble out, it won't fit under some seats. Since it is designed to serve as an upright bag, it isn't gonna be a super comfortable fit for your cat under a seat.  So if you've got air travel coming up I'd recommend you find something else. We've used these Siivton 4 sided carriers on United Airlines multiple times to success.

What Differentiates It?

The Fat Cat is a great traditional backpack style carrier that's going to be comfortable for you and even better it is also going to give your cat a great ride.

There are a couple of key items that differentiated this bag from other competitors in the bubble carrier / backpack carrier space  (like the Texsens Innovative Bubble backpack) for me:

  • The zippers: The zippers have so far been really solid. I've had some experiences with other bags where the zippers simply don't work or they slide out of the tracks and I have to mess with them to get them back into place. I haven't run into that even once with this bag.
  • Window Placement: The whole point of a bubble backpack is to ensure your cat can see out of the bag. Many other bags seem to place the bubble way too high in the bag and the cat has to be sitting all the way up to look out. This version is placed in a better spot in my opinion, Lexi and Beast both seem to spend more time looking out than they do in other bags.
  • Space Inside: As mentioned, the claim to fame for this bag is the amount of space inside. Compared to other bags it does provide additional space for your cat to move around. Both my cats can easily turn around and find a comfy way to lay or sit in it without any issue.

Wrapping It Up

All in all you've got an excellent Cat Bubble Backpack at hand with the Fat Cat Backpack.  It is comfortable for the humans. It is comfortable for the felines. It gives your cats a view and it makes them a topic of conversation too! I've had lots of people stop and ask if there's a cat inside.

And last but not least, it is certainly a heck of a step up on any single shoulder strap carrier that you might have around, one cheer for this cat backpack carrier on that front. It won't dig into your shoulders and you don't have to try and hold it with one hand while you lean over to counter balance the weight either.

I give it a solid 2 thumbs up and Lexi and Beast both give it 5 paws of satisfaction. And yes, I know cats only have four paws, but I couldn't figure out how to design a scale of paws and a tail...

13 Best Cat Bubble Backpacks in 2026 – Buy One Now

This post was updated in July of 2026 based on recent carrier use and changes in product availability.

Love taking your cat out but don’t like the single strap carriers? Who can blame you? With every step you take it bangs against your side and digs into your shoulder.

This is why backpack cat carriers were created. They are really versatile and far easier on us humans. My favorite backpacks have a bubble built right in to provide a view for your cat and them look like an astronaut!

Every cat owner should have one! It will get you and your cat out more than any other method! Let’s take a look at the best cat bubble backpacks.

Best Overall Bubble Backpack

Texsens Innovative Traveler Bubble Backpack Carrier for Cats

Texsens Innovative Traveler Bubble Backpack Pet Carriers for Cats and Dogs

This one's stuck around on our list for a reason — it's basically the OG bubble backpack, and it still holds up against everything newer that's come out since. If you want the classic bubble-window silhouette without any bells and whistles to fuss over, this is a safe, proven place to start.

Texsens is the most well known brand of bubble backpacks on the market today and probably the most trusted as well. They were and continue to be been one of the pioneers in developing this type of carrier so that’s no surprise.

Texsens has been producing high quality backpacks for both cats and dogs now for several years. This gives them an edge because they have a bunch of experience and feedback to build their products off of.

Key features worth noting on this bag:

  • You've got the sweet looking space capsule window built in (interchanges with a vent)
  • There is a ton of ventilation, 14 vents in total when you include the 3 in the window
  • The shoulder straps are padded and adjustable to easily find the right fit for you, and the chest buckle spreads the weight out so the straps don't dig into your shoulders
  • Built in security leash connection for an added layer of safety for your cat
  • You can open top or either side making it easy to get your cat inside.
  • It comes with a built in soft washable pad so you can easily remove it between trips
  • Three PVC-mesh sides give your cat a real 180-degree view out, not just a tiny porthole — great for cats who like to people-watch on the go

The Runner Up Astronaut Backpack

The Fat Cat Backpack for Large Cats

Fat Cat Backpack Carrier - Airline Approved Cat Carrier with Space Capsule Bubble for for Small Cats, Kitten - Premium Charcoal Cat Carrier Backpack for Outdoor, Travel, Hiking, Pet Supplies

The Fat Cat is an excellent bag specifically designed for larger cats. We've taken this one out for real adventures — grocery runs, a 15-mile bike ride, walks through the Chicago Zoo, even a lazy afternoon at the Lake Michigan beachfront.

It is difficult to tell from the picture, but it actually has quite a bit of extra space inside it compared to other cat backpacks. The company that designed it has said it is rated to hold cats up to 25 pounds, that's quite a hefty cat to stick inside a backpack, but I honestly believe they'd fit given my experience! And that's an upgrade from the 19 pound version when I got the original in 2018.

Key features worth noting on this bag:

  • Provides plenty of space for large cats, rated to hold up to a 25 pound cat
  • There are a couple of mesh pockets built into the side to easily carry treats etc.
  • There's tons of ventilation built right in to keep your kitty cool even on hot days
  • The window is placed lower in the bag making it easier for your kitty to look out
  • The entire top of the bag unzips making it easy to load your cat in or let them out
  • Great for short trips or long adventures, I've taken Beast on a 15 mile bike ride in it

The Budget Friendly Version

BAGLHER Cat Carrier Backpack Bubble

BAGLHER Cat Carrier Backpack Bubble - Fit Up to 18 Lbs - Airline-Approved Dog Backpack Carrier for Small Pets Puppies Dogs Bunny, Space Capsule Dog Carrier Backpack for Travel Outdoor Hiking, Purple

This is a solid, no-frills entry point if you want the bubble-window look without stretching your budget — a good pick for a cat who mostly just wants to see the world go by on the way to the vet or during a walk around.

This is also a version where in place of a standard 'bubble window' the backpack's entire backside is see through so your cat gets a whole view of the world! Quite a nice ride.

  • Transparent front bubble gives your cat a clear view without needing to crane their neck
  • Recommended for pets up to 18 pounds, covering most cats comfortably
  • Seven ventilation holes spread across keep air moving even on warmer days
  • Sweat-wicking straps are a small detail that makes a real difference on longer carries
  • The support mat inside is removable and washable, so cleanup after an accident or a shedding session isn't a whole ordeal
  • An internal buckle keeps your cat clipped in by collar or harness for added safety

Roomier Shape for Turning

Cawypety Cat Backpack Carrier

Cawypety Cat Backpack Carrier, Breathable Cat Carrier Large Space Bubble Pet Backpack for Kitty Small Dog up to 15lbs, Transparent & Foldable Pet Carrier for Travel Hiking

This one leans into a squarer, roomier shape than the typical dome-style bubble backpack, which makes a real difference if your cat likes to actually turn around instead of just sitting facing forward the whole trip.

It also has a couple of convenient carrying pockets if you're looking to bring snacks, a leash, or whatever else along. I love that the whole window pops off for easy in and out for your fur ball!

  • The square build gives cats  room to turn around and get comfortable, not just sit still
  • Side entry and exit points through the bubble window make loading a reluctant cat a little easier than a single top opening
  • Folds down flat for storage, with side pockets and hook holes so it doesn't just become a bulky closet item between trips
  • Built from 600D oxford cloth and mesh, scratch-resistant if you've got a claw sharpener
  • A built-in anti-escape harness adds a second layer of security beyond the zipper
  • The reversible cushion has two sides for different seasons, a nice touch if you use this carrier year-round

The only real drawback on this one in my opinion is that it is sized for smaller cats, ranging up to maybe 15 pounds before it can feel a little small. If your cat is small too, no biggie, but worth noting!

Loaded With Features!

Pecute Cat Backpack Carrier

Pecute Cat Backpack Carrier,Large Space Cat Bubble Backpack,Ergonomic,Gray | Upgraded Transparent Window Offers Greater Transparency,More Wear-Resistant,Sunshade curtain,Folding bowl,Ventilated

This is the most feature-loaded pick at this price point in the roundup, so if you're looking for bells and whistles look no further than right here!

It comes with a couple of extras you won't find on the more basic bubble backpacks, which makes it a good fit if you're planning actual outings rather than just quick trips to the vet.

  • Upgraded PC transparent window for a clearer, more durable view than standard acrylic
  • Comes with a folding pet bowl built in, handy for water breaks on longer walks or trips
  • A magnetic pull-down sunshade blocks UV without you having to buy a separate cover
  • Metal lockable zippers plus a built-in safety leash give you two layers of "my cat isn't getting out of this unless I want them to"
  • Large mesh panels on both sides keep airflow strong even with the sunshade down
  • The one-piece EVA 3D ergonomic backplate is designed to sit comfortably against your back, and it folds flat for storage when not in use, great for storage in a closet

Equipped for Comfort

PETKIT Backpack Carrier with Fan & Light

PETKIT Cat Backpack Carrier with Inbuilt Fan & Light, Airline-Approved Pet Backpack Bubble for Kitty Small Dog, Detachable Dog Backpack with Padded Strap for Travel, Hiking, Walking & Outdoor

If your cat gets stressed out by carriers, this is the one in the lineup actually designed around that problem. It's got a genuinely unique feature set compared to everything else here.

While I don't normally love adding electronics to things these days (they seem like just more stuff to break), this could be a boon if you're in a hot environment or if you know you'll be traveling when it is dark out and need to see inside.  A few items worth noting:

  • Its "2.0" ventilation system includes an adjustable-power fan for those really hot days
  • Multiple passive air vents keep things breathable even with the fan off, so you're not totally dependent on it
  • Thick high-density sponge padding and ergonomic back support cut down on shoulder strain during longer carries, especially on a roadtrip or an airport trip
  • At 3.5 lbs empty, it's one of the lighter carriers in this roundup, rated for pets under 17 lbs
  • A "hidden zone" is built in specifically to give anxious cats a low-stimulation spot to retreat to inside the bag, rather than being fully exposed through the window at all times
  • Adjustable rotary-dial LED lighting means your cat is visible after dark, a genuinely nice touch for evening walks if you want to show your kitty off

Note: Worth knowing it needs a power bank (not included) to actually run. If you're looking for a great powerbank to support it (or anything else for that matter) this is the one I use.

Maximum Space

Lollimeow 2 Sided Expandable Cat Backpack

Lollimeow Expandable Bubble Cat Carrier Backpack, Supports up to 16 lbs | Clear Bubble, Dual-Side Expansion, Collapsible, Ventilated, Airline Approved, Removable Washable Pad, For Cats and Small Dogs

This is the space-maximizer of the group — instead of a fixed dome, both the front and back panels expand outward, so you get meaningfully more room than a same-sized rigid bubble backpack when you actually need it.

A couple of key feature worth noting on this one:

  • A crystal-clear panoramic bubble gives your cat an unobstructed view in every direction
  • Dual-side expansion (front and back) more than doubles the usable interior space once you lay the included mat flat on the bottom
  • Nine airflow vents plus breathable mesh panels keep things from getting stuffy even with the panels expanded
  • The hard-shell top holds its shape well, while soft mesh side pockets give you somewhere to stash small essentials like treats, a laser pointer, or a collapsible water bowl
  • Padded straps with lumbar support and a buckle stabilizer make it more comfortable to carry than it looks
  • A quick-access front pocket fits treats, a collapsible bowl, or even a mini fan, rated for cats up to 16 pounds
  • Quick-access pocket stores treats, collapsible bowl, or mini fan; perfect for use for hiking, vet visits and airplane travel

Side Loader With 4 Doors

Lekebobor Cat Carrier Backpack, Expandable

Lekebobor Cat Carrier Backpack, Expandable Pet Carrier with Sun Shade & Full Front Opening, Breathable Mesh Backpack for Small Dogs & Medium Cats Up to 18 Lbs, Foldable for Hiking, Camping (Grey)

This one's built for cats who don't love being loaded in through a single top opening — with mesh windows and entrances on all four sides, your cat basically has options for how they want to get in (or peek out).

Lexi hates being loaded into things from the top, she freaks and sticks all four of her paws out, so this approach is a huge boon for cats like her!

  • Mesh windows on all four sides, plus four separate entrances, give your cat airflow and access from pretty much any angle
  • The expandable back panel gives extra room when you need it and collapses flat again for storage when you don't
  • A durable top rod and side frame keep the structure from collapsing, even with a cat inside
  • 300D water-repellent Oxford fabric holds up well against light rain and general wear, so take it on lots of hikes or even a bike ride in the rain!
  • A pull-down roller-blind sunshade and two side pockets round it out for actual outdoor use, not just short trips
  • Rated up to 18 lbs, on the higher end for this category

The Most Affordable

BEIKOTT Cat Backpack Carrier, Space Capsule

BEIKOTT Cat Backpack Carrier Breathable Pet Travel Bag for Cats Dogs Bunny | Breathable Airline-Approved, Full Transparent Dome, Padded Backpack Straps for Walking, Driving, Vet Visits, Outdoor Trips

This is the pick in the lineup that leans hardest into actual travel use — it's built with an eye toward fitting the kind of space constraints you run into with air travel, not just neighborhood walks.

Given it still performs well too, I don't know how they do it at this low price point!

  • 360-degree ventilation through circular air holes plus a large mesh window keeps airflow strong from every side
  • Adjustable padded shoulder straps with a breathable mesh back panel make longer carries more comfortable
  • A reinforced top handle gives you a quick one-hand grab option when you don't want to sling it on your back
  • Compact enough to fit most airline under-seat allowances — always double-check your specific airline's policy before flying, since this varies carrier to carrier
  • The hard, scratch-resistant BPA-free shell holds its shape well, backed by heavy-duty Oxford fabric on the exterior
  • A roomy transparent bubble interior comfortably fits pets up to 15 lbs

For Kittens or Small Cats

Vivicreate Large Cat Backpack Carrier

Vivicreate Large Cat Backpack Carrier for Travel and Hiking Transparent Pet Bubble Backpack for Cats up to 20lbs with Ventilation and Padded Straps Mochila para Gatos transportadora mascotas (Pink)

Don't let the "Large" in this bag's name fool you — despite the branding, the seller's own spec sheet caps it at around 13 pounds, so this one's really built for kittens and smaller cats, not a hefty adult.

Once you go in with the right expectations, though, it's a good-looking, well-thought-out bag, and it's a newer arrival to the market that's already built up a small but well-liked following.

  • The front bubble panel gives your cat a real view of the world going by, which is the whole point of these carriers — it helps a cat feel less shut in when the scenery keeps changing around them.
  • Air holes throughout plus mesh side panels keep fresh air moving through the bag, so your cat isn't stuck breathing stale air on a warm walk.
  • Padded, adjustable shoulder straps with a chest buckle help spread the weight evenly across your shoulders instead of digging into just one side on a longer carry.
  • Rated to hold pets up to about 13 pounds — perfect for smaller cats or kittens!
  • Built with a scratch-resistant outer shell over a sturdy base, so it can handle a bit of clawing and everyday bumps without falling apart.
  • Designed for everyday outings — walks, hikes, vet trips — rather than marketed as an airline-specific carrier, so keep that in mind if air travel is your main use case.

Full Window Expander

Keedo Transparent Cat Carrier Travel Backpack

Lollimeow Cat Carrier Backpack, Clear Bubble Waterproof Backpack Carrier, Pets and Small Dogs,Airline-Approved, Designed for Travel, Hiking, Walking & Outdoor Use (Classic-Green)

Heads up if you've read an older version of this post: this link used to point to a "Keedo" carrier, but Amazon has since reassigned this exact listing to a different product entirely — it's now sold as a Lollimeow expandable bubble backpack.

The reason we included this option is because we love the full window back along with the fact that once you arrive somewhere you can pop open the expander and give your fur ball some extra space!

  • A crystal-clear panoramic bubble window gives your cat a full view out from the front
  • The back panel expands out to 16.5"L x 9.5"W x 16.5"H, roughly doubling the usable interior space compared to its collapsed size
  • Nine airflow vents plus mesh panels keep things breathable whether the panel is expanded or not
  • Padded straps with lumbar support make it noticeably more comfortable on your back than the strap setup on cheaper carriers
  • A hard cushion base plus an included plush blanket give your cat a genuinely comfortable place to settle in, not just a bare pad
  • A quick-access pocket up front fits treats, a collapsible bowl, or a mini fan
  • On the smaller end from a weight standpoint, for kitty cats up to 14 pounds

The Compact Option

ORIZZP Cat Backpack Carrier

Cat Backpack Carrier, Bubble Backpack for Cat Kitten Small Puppy and Bunny, Space Capsule Bubble Cat Backpack Carrier, Airline Approved Waterproof Yellow Pet Backpack for Small Dog

This is the compact option in the lineup — a good fit if you've got a smaller cat and don't need the extra bulk that comes with the bigger carriers on this list.  This one is the perfect size for a cat like Beast that is closer to ~8 pounds instead of a beefier cat.

  • A clear "space capsule" bubble design keeps the classic look this whole category is known
  • Adjustable shoulder straps with a chest buckle are designed to sit comfortably regardless of who's wearing it
  • I love the multi color selections available, perfect for anyone and any color furball
  • Comes with a soft mat plus a honeycomb-structure ventilation panel for airflow
  • It's recommended for pets up to 10 lbs, noticeably narrower than most other picks in this roundup, so it's really built for smaller cats specifically

Backward Expander

TOYSINTHEBOX Expandable Cat Carrier Backpack

Expandable Cat Carrier Backpack with Bubble Window, Animal Print | Breathable mesh, anti-collapse frame, side door, safety leash and escape-resistant zippers for vet visits and outdoor travel.

This one closes out the roundup with a genuinely useful trick: an expandable back that gives your cat real sitting-and-turning room without making the whole bag bulkier when it's collapsed for storage or travel.

Even with the expander though, this one is rated for the smaller size of cats, so you'll want to check your weight and your measurements before making a purchase:

  • The unzippable back expansion adds real interior room for your cat to sit up or turn around, not just lie flat
  • A panoramic clear bubble window up front keeps the classic bubble-backpack view
  • Mesh ventilation panels on multiple sides keep airflow strong even with the back expanded
  • A built-in safety leash clip keeps your cat secured any time the bag is open
  • Huge variety of color options that can meet almost any need
  • The structured, anti-collapse body holds its shape when your cat shifts around inside
  • Padded straps, a chest buckle, a top carry handle, and a side storage pocket round it out — rated for pets up to 12 pounds, so it's best suited to smaller-to-mid-sized cats

Common Q&A on Cat Bubble Backpacks

Why use a bubble carrier instead of a traditional carrier??

There are a couple of key reasons people prefer to switch over to a bubble carrier in place of a traditional carrier:

  1. Comfort: The biggest factor I’ve found in making the switch is that bubble carriers are just far easier to get around with than a traditional single strap shoulder carrier. Backpacks were designed for this purpose specifically, and cat backpack carriers are just a heck of a lot easier on your shoulders than that single strap is.
  2. Safety: The bulk of backpack carriers come equipped with additional safety features that traditional carriers don’t have included. While this is largely because they are often designed for Adventure Cats it doesn’t mean those safety features are any less helpful for your typical cat just going on walks.
  3. Cat Happiness: A lot of traditional carriers don’t provide the best view in the world for your cat. They can of course hear a lot through the mesh, but they often can’t see much through it. This is limiting and makes the trip boring! The space bubble lets your cat see everything going on around them and gives them a chance to check out the world.
  4. Style: Let’s be honest, they’re just plain cool looking compared to a typical carrier. And it is way easier for other people to check your feline friend out as you take a walk! What could be better?!?!

If you’re still curious about traditional carriers (I still have one myself) then I would also recommend you read my other article here on the best traditional carriers out there. It should help you make a decision if you’re not sold on a backpack yet.

How do I get my cat used to it?

When you bring a new carrier home you’re going to want to take some time getting your cat used to the carrier before immediately loading her right into it and taking her for a walk.

While I understand you just got this really cool carrier and want to show it off and show your cat off I would suggest a gradual approach to use. This will ensure that you don’t scare your cat away from the carrier right away and then have to spend weeks getting he or she acclimated afterward.

So how do you go about it?  Well there are a couple of pretty simple steps you can take to ensure that your cat will end up loving the new carrier:

  • When it first arrives be sure to let your cat explore and sniff it without trying to put her in it
  • If you have any Feliway Spray you might also want to try spraying some of this on and in the carrier
  • Be sure to leave it out in the open and place some treats inside the carrier so your cat associates the carrier with positive things
  • Start out with short walks and don’t make the first trip to somewhere your cat hates (the vet or the groomer)
  • Take your cat on multiple trips a week, but keep them short and end them with treats when you get home
  • Over time work up to longer trips and start feathering in trips to the vet and other places

Should I leash and harness train my cat?

While it is not a necessity by any stretch of the word, many people that use bubble backpacks also have a desire to leash and harness train their cat to take it on adventures.

This is no surprise, if you want to show your cat the world you’d also want to let them out to actually get a chance to explore it a little bit.

There’s an excellent article available on AdventureCats.org that will tell you all about the best method to harness train your cat, but here’s a quick rundown just to get you started:

  • Introduce the Harness: As with anything else (costumes, collars, etc.) you’ll want to introduce your cat to a harness slowly to ensure they associate positive things with it. This means letting them sniff it, letting their scent get on it, and of course rewarding them with treats when it is nearby. You can also spray some Feliway on it for an added benefit.
  • Slip It On: Put the harness on your cat, but don’t actually tighten it up. This will let her get a feel for it without restricting her movement. Over time tighten the harness and then remove it after short periods of time working up to longer attempts. Again, treats and praise go a long way.
  • Attaching the Leash: Once you’ve got your kitty used to the harness you can attach the leash to it and take her outside. This is where your let your cat do the exploring. Go at her pace and let her figure out what is of interest. As she gets more used to the world outside then you can start encouraging her to follow you and keep pace with where you want to go.

A few other tips:

  • Always pick up your cat and carry them through the threshold of the door when you’re first harness training her. This makes her think that’s the only way to go outside. Otherwise she’s prone to learn the second the door opens she can bolt out.
  • Don’t leave your cat unattended outside, especially with a harness and leash on. This is an easy way for your cat to get stuck and injured.
  • Always ensure any cat that is going outside is microchipped at the least. I also recommend a breakaway collar with tags with your cats essential information.

How heavy of a cat can these actually hold?

This is one of those specs that's easy to assume is standardized across the category, and it's really not. Most of the bubble backpacks in this roundup land somewhere in the 15-18 lb range, which covers your average adult cat comfortably.

But it's not universal — one pick on this list is branded a "Large" carrier and its title even advertises up to 20 lbs, but the seller's own product description states the real capacity closer to 13 lbs once you read past the headline number. That's a meaningful gap if you've got a bigger cat and you're going off the product name alone.

Before you buy, don't just trust the size label in the title on Amazon — scroll down to the specific weight rating in the actual description and a couple additional reviews from the wild.

Will my carrier smell weird when it arrives?

Honestly, yes, more often than not. New plastic and vinyl products almost always carry that off-gassing smell straight out of the box, and it's come up often enough across different brands in this category that it's clearly not a one-off bad batch — it's just what happens when a bubble window and its plastic frame have been sealed up in shipping for weeks.

The good news is it's temporary. Unzip the carrier all the way and let it air out somewhere with decent airflow — a porch, garage, or a room with a window cracked — for a day or two before you expect your cat to spend real time in it.

Wiping down the bubble panel and interior lining with a pet-safe cleaner speeds things along too. If the smell hasn't faded noticeably after a week of airing out, that's worth flagging to the seller, but for most of these, a couple of days does the trick.

How sturdy are the straps and zippers?

It varies, and it tends to track pretty closely with price. The lower-cost picks in this roundup are more likely to draw complaints about straps fraying or zippers sticking and slipping off track after regular use — not universal, but a recurring enough pattern to go in aware of.

The pricier options generally hold up better here, with sturdier stitching and heavier-duty zipper pulls. A few things worth checking regardless of which one you pick: metal zippers tend to survive more open-and-close cycles than plastic ones, a chest buckle or strap stabilizer keeps the load from shifting and straining the seams, and reinforced stitching at the strap attachment points matters, since that's usually where a bag gives out first.

If you're buying on the lower end of the price range, it's worth handling it a little more gently — don't expect it to survive years of daily heavy use the way a pricier build might.

Will this actually fit under an airplane seat?

Generally, no — not the classic rigid, dome-shaped bubble backpacks, anyway. We cover this in more detail in our Fat Cat Backpack Review, but the short version is that a hard plastic bubble takes up space that doesn't compress, and most airline under-seat dimensions just don't leave room for it, even with the bubble panel swapped out.

If air travel is actually on your itinerary, look for an expandable or collapsible-style carrier instead — one that can flatten down for the flight and open back up at your destination. A few of the picks in this roundup are built that way specifically, which is worth prioritizing if a flight is the whole reason you're shopping.

For what it's worth, we've had good luck flying with a different style of carrier (a 4-sided design, not a bubble backpack) on United specifically — details on that are in the linked review above. If a listing doesn't explicitly call out under-seat or airline compatibility, assume it wasn't designed with that in mind.

Does the ventilation/fan actually work well?

They're a genuinely nice feature when they work as advertised, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations rather than assuming a fan automatically means a cooler, happier cat.

Our fan-equipped pick in this roundup gets mixed feedback — plenty of buyers are happy with the added airflow, but others report the fan doesn't move much air or that the fan-and-light combo stops working reliably over time. It's also worth knowing that most of these fans run off a separate power bank you have to supply yourself, not a battery built into the bag, so it's really more of an add-on feature than something fully baked into the carrier.

If a fan is the main reason you're drawn to a particular pick, treat it as a nice bonus rather than the deciding factor — the mesh panels and ventilation holes built into these carriers do the bulk of the actual airflow work whether or not the fan is running.

If You Don’t Trust Me – Trust Anna Akana

Now if you don’t happen to trust me about how awesome these backpacks are then you should definitely take the word of YouTube star Anna Akana. Here’s an awesome video of her showing what happens when she goes out with her cats in her bubble backpack!

Wrapping It Up on Cat Bubble Backpacks

My personal opinion is that cat bubble backpacks are a heck of a lot more versatile than your traditional style carrier. First off, they look a heck of a lot better!

But they also give your cat a much better view of the outside world while still maintaining all of the important safety features that come with a regular carrier.

Another huge benefit is that you’re going to have a heck of a lot more comfort for yourself when you use a backpack style carrier. It is a heck of a lot easier on your shoulders and your back because it distributes the weight a lot more effectively than a single strap.

Do you use a backpack carrier for your cat? Does yours have the cool bubble to give your cat a view of the outside world? If I’ve missed any of the awesome bubble backpacks please send me a link.

This way I can track down those additional options and get them added to the article. Feel free to leave a comment below or send me an email at Craig@StuffCatsWant.com.

11 Reasons You Should Foster a Cat [Starting Today]

This post was updated in July of 2026 for freshness/recency.

If you've ever debated whether or not you should foster a cat then this article is just for you! Here are 11 wonderful reasons to start fostering a shelter cat today!

Check out the infographic by clicking to expand it or simply read on for the detailed notes!

11 reasons to foster a cat infographic

a kitten being bottle fed

1. It Saves a Life By Freeing Up Space In Shelters

Most animal shelters operate at full capacity pretty much 100% of the time and they often take the most at risk cats out of animal control facilities first.

Shelters are often waiting for a cat to go to a home just so they can intake another cat from the local Animal Care and Control facility before it gets euthanized.

By taking a cat out of the shelter, even temporarily, you free up space for another cat to come into the shelter system.

These days more and more shelters are becoming no kill which ensures that once the cat comes into the shelter it will be cared for until it is adopted!

So every cat you foster is basically ensuring another cat life saved!

2. You Might Find a Lifelong Friend

You'll commonly hear the term 'Failed Foster' floating around animal shelters. It essentially means you fostered a cat or dog and ended up adopting it.

It is no surprise this happens often. You get to know a cat and you come to love her and voila you've now got another resident cat. That's how we ended up adopting our cat Lexi.

We had her about a month and she was getting along well enough with our resident cat Beastling. Beast wasn't much of a people cat at the time and Lexi loved cuddling up and she loved playing with Beastling!

It was a match made in heaven! Four years later they still play daily and Lexi and Beast are both now cuddly as can be with us!

3. It Gives You Someone To Spoil

If you're ever feeling guilty about spending money on toys and fun stuff for yourself then stop right there!

If you're fostering a cat you can spoil the heck out of it and feel good about it cause you're doing something great for the local animal community!

You can buy all sorts of fun things from cat window beds to astronaut backpacks to a gigantic cat tree!

Kudos to you you good Samaritan! Keep spending and support your local cats!

4. Your Resident Cat Might Want a Pal

Many cats are the sole pet in the household and their pet parents might work long hours or be gone from the house for extended periods.

Cats do of course enjoy their solitary time. But it is also important that they get plenty of exercise and have something to keep them busy if you're gone for extended periods.

Being left alone for long periods can result in your kitty keeping you up all night or in worse behavior like damaging your home or furniture.

Fostering is a great way to identify a potential pal for your resident cat! You get a chance to see how they get along and whether or not they'd be a good fit for one another.

If they are a great fit then it might be the perfect time to adopt a pal!

And if they aren't a great fit you may verify that your resident cat is simply better off as a single cat! Either way you've done a service that was great for the foster kitty!

5. You Get To Meet A Cat Before Adopting

Let's be honest. We all know someone that has fostered a cat and ended up adopting that cat. I'm no stranger to this. That's how we ended up with our cat Lexi!

While calling fostering 'try it before you buy it' sounds unappealing, there is some truth to it. Especially if you already have a resident cat.

We are fortunate enough to have a spare room to foster cats in. We almost always introduce our foster cat(s) to our resident cats after a few days or weeks. It depends on the cat.

But if you're already looking to adopt another cat and you want to see if your cat and the foster are a fit it gives you an extended opportunity to test the waters.

While some cat relationships are complex and may take months or even years to fully develop, a few weeks is certainly a great way to get a general guide.

Some cats are simply better off alone. Some cats want a pal. And some are in the middle. A month or two month long fostering session may be exactly what you need to determine the fit.

And if it doesn't work out the foster session still has tons of benefits for the kitty you've been temporarily watching over! Win win for everyone.

6. You Get To Socialize Awesome Cats

If you love playing with cats then fostering is a great way to get a fix. Cats of almost any age still love to play!

When you're fostering you get constant opportunities to play with any cat toy that comes to mind.

Sometimes I think I've ended up buying more toys for my foster cats than I have for my resident cats.

My resident cats of course always get the hand me downs once the fosters go on to a forever home, so everyone wins!

7. Every Cat is Unique, Experience It All

One thing I can say for sure is that every cat I've ever encountered is unique. Most cats have similar tendencies (they like to be up high, they meow for attention, don't touch their stomach etc.), but they all have special traits too.

Our foster cat Buzz loved to dip is paw in water then lick water off his paw. Jill would only drink water from a tall glass. Summer would only eat if you were petting her while she ate.

Kittens will knock their water fountain over or go swimming in it!

You get to see all sorts of hilarious behavior and hear all sorts of one of a kind meows and trills that each cat has developed to communicate with their humans.

If nothing else it is fun just to experience all the new things each cat brings to the table!

8. Finding the Right Furrever Home is Easier

Learning about each cat makes it far easier to help determine what type of home will be ideal for it to live in long term.

If you've got a dog and it is obvious the cat doesn't like dogs then that information can be captured and used to filter out families looking for a cat that already have a dog.

The same be true of young children, certain genders, loud noises, etc. Cats are unique and each has their own personality and quirks. Identifying as many of these as possible during a foster session ensures that the shelter can align the right home the first time.

Finding the right home the first time is extremely important. Given that cats don't tend to like being moved around to new environments it can be devastating when they spend an extended period of time in a home and then get returned to the shelter because it wasn't the right fit.

9. Cats With Foster Reports Are Easier to Get Adopted

A foster report is basically something the foster parent writes up on the kitty after staying in the home for a few weeks or months. It details all their quirks, their fun habits, anything to look out for, etc.

I volunteer at Chicago PAWS on a recurring basis. Cats, especially adult cats, with a foster report are a heck of a lot easier to get adopted.

This is because a lot of shelters operate heavily on volunteer hours and most volunteers aren't available on a daily basis.

This means that when volunteers are trying to match cats to adopters it can be hard to know which cat to focus show!

A foster report makes it that much easier for the volunteers to learn about the cat and point the right family to that cat when they come in!

10. There Isn't a Long Term Commitment, But There Could Be...

Pets are a lot of work. Dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, snakes. All of them.  Some people want to have pets, but don't have the stamina or the desire to keep an animal their entire life.

Fostering is an excellent way to give a pet a break for several weeks or even months but not have a lifelong commitment.

The longest we've fostered is 2 months and it was an excellent break for the cat from the shelter.  So much so that our foster Buzz went back to the shelter and was adopted within a couple of days.

Fostering is the perfect fit for people who want a pet fix but who still want the flexibility of going on long vacations, working long hours, or staying out late at night without concern.

Or even if you simply don't want the permanent responsibility of a pet but still want to help your local animal community!

a cat sitting on a laptop

11. You Get to Constantly Learn

If you're a life long learner and you're always curious then a foster cat can be a great doorway into learning.

Since cats have tons of weird behaviors (at least they are weird to us humans) then you get to research all sorts of fun stuff each time you see a new one!

Why is my cat pawing at the ground around her bowl?

Why do cats love being scratched on the chin, but don't want you to touch their stomach?

How do I transition a cat from one litter type to another?

The possibilities are endless and the fun is limitless!

Bonus Reason: Cat Parades!

If you haven't seen it yet, multiple cities are starting to host their own cat parades. This is when people show their cats in their windows while tons of folks walk past and check them out! Other Things To Consider

While I absolutely love fostering cats and highly recommend it to others there are of course other things you should consider before diving right in.

You can check out this article from PetMD about determining whether or not you're read to foster cats. PetFinder.com also has an excellent set of resources to help you foster effectively and ensure you're ready for what comes with it.

I'm quite familiar with several of the available places to foster cats in Chicago (Chicago PAWS, Treehouse, The Anti Cruelty Society and many more...), but you can find foster opportunities anywhere by simply googling 'foster cats [ZIP]' and inserting your zip code.

If you've got your own story to tell about fostering a cat please to share it below in the comments!

We always love to hear positive stories about cats ending in a 'failed foster' or finding their forever home after a wonderful foster session!

Thanks for reading and please share this article and infographic with your friends and families!

The 15 Best Cat Litter Mats of 2026 [Stop Tracking Cold]

This post was updated in July of 2026 to reflect the latest litter mats.

Everyone who owns a cat knows that stepping on cat litter is no pleasant experience. It can be anything from a little ‘Ugh, again?’ in your head to ‘Owww! Dang, that really hurt!’

At the least though it is a huge annoyance to constantly have cat litter all over your house. Litter mats are the first line of defense in stopping litter tracking. If you’re looking for more details on litter tracking, check out this article.

If you’re looking for the best cat litter mat on the market then look no further. I’ve pulled together a compilation of the best mats out there all into one place for your convenience. Several of them have my detailed reviews linked as well, so take a look at those!

Best Overall

Amazon Basics Less-Mess Litter Trapping Cat Litter Box Mat

Amazon Basics Less-Mess Litter Trapping Cat Litter Box Mat, Soft on Kitty Paws, Waterproof, Scatter Control, 24" x 35", Grey

it's the most bought and most reviewed mat in this entire roundup, from a brand name you already trust for basic pet gear, and it delivers the "grabbing" style trapping of pricier mats without the pricier price tag.

Amazon Basics' own litter trapping mat earns the top spot in this roundup fair and square. It uses a crisscross diamond mesh design with a deep edge border, so it functions like the higher-end "grabbing" style mats we love without carrying an aftermarket brand's price tag. It's also, by a wide margin, one of the most bought and best-reviewed mats in this whole list, which tells you plenty of other cat owners have already put it through its paces. If you just want a mat that works without overthinking which "system" is best for your setup, this is the easy call.

  • The diamond mesh pattern with a deep edge border does real double duty — it grabs litter off paws and keeps the loose bits it misses from wandering past the mat's border.
  • It's genuinely low-effort to keep clean: shake it out, vacuum it, or hose it down when it needs more than that.
  • The waterproof backing means an accident won't soak through to the floor underneath.
  • It has a no-slip backing built into it, it won’t slide all over when your cat goes in and out
  • It's backed by Amazon's own 1-year limited warranty, more of a safety net than most no-name mats in this price range offer.
  • It's sold as a single mat or in a 10-pack, handy if you're outfitting multiple litter boxes or want backups on hand for laundry day.
  • It's a fairly no-frills design compared to some of the more specialized trapping systems further down this list — you're paying for a trusted name and a low price, not extra engineering.

Best for Litter Box Accidents

iPrimio Large Cat Litter Trapper Mat

iPrimio Cat Litter Trapper Mat, Waterproof, Double Layer, 30" x 23", Black | Double layer honeycomb traps scattered litter while the waterproof base blocks urine. Soft on paws and empties in one pour.

This is the one mat here purpose-built with room to slide in an absorbent pad, which most competitors don't specifically plan for.

iPrimio built its reputation on a two-layer design most other mats only kind of stumbled into — iPrimio actually engineered around it, with enough space between layers to slide in an absorbent pad if urine outside the box is a recurring issue in your house.

That's a small design choice that makes a real difference if you've got a cat prone to accidents near (not always in) the box. It's held up well over the long haul too, with owners regularly reporting years of hard use without the mat breaking down. If liquid containment specifically is your top concern rather than just tracked litter, this is the pick built for that job.

  • The two-layer design with extra-large holes traps loose litter effectively while giving you a spot to slide in an absorbent pad for urine.
  • It's surprisingly durable for the price — plenty of owners report years of continued heavy use, including regular deep-cleaning washes.
  • Cleanup for accidents is genuinely simple: hose it down and let it air dry, no special products needed.
  • The surface is designed to be gentle on sensitive paws, so it shouldn't discourage cats from walking across it.
  • It comes in a few different sizes if the standard 30"x23" doesn't fit your setup.

One word of warning before you make your choice:

  • Some cats need a short adjustment period before they'll walk across it instead of jumping over it — budget a few days for your cat to get used to it.

Best Budget Trap-and-Pour

Motsamla Cat Litter Box Mat

Motsamla Cat Litter Box Mat, 35" x 24" Large Kitty Litter Trapping Mat Keep Floor Clean, Scatter Control, Waterproof, Easy to Clean, Durable Large Size Litter Mat

This one uses the same fold-and-pour mesh trapping concept as pricier competitors, at one of the lower price points in this whole roundup.

Motsamla's mat uses the classic "trap it, then pour it back" approach — a mesh-coil top layer designed to let litter fall through and sit there until you're ready to dump it, rather than tracking across your floor. The brand describes this as an improved, tested redesign over earlier versions, worth knowing if a Motsamla mat let you down before.

It's made of environmental PVC built to handle daily wear, and at 35"x23" it covers the ground right outside a standard box. If you want that trap-and-pour concept without paying a premium for it, this is a solid, budget-friendly way to get it.

  • The mesh-coil top layer traps litter as your cat walks off the box, then lets you dump it back in or into the trash in one motion.
  • It's made of environmental PVC, so it's built to handle daily wear without breaking down quickly.
  • At 35"x23", it's a solid size for covering the area right outside a standard litter box.
  • The brand describes this as an improved, tested redesign over earlier versions of the mat, worth knowing if you've tried a Motsamla mat before and weren't sold.
  • It's one of the more affordable trap-style mats in this roundup, if budget matters as much as function.
  • This is a newer product and while we like it, there's still a thinner amount of overall customer feedback on it. If long term trends matter, keep your eyes on it for a few months first.

The Biggest

LittleTiger Cat Litter Mat, XL Super Size

LittleTiger Cat Litter Mat, XL Super Size, Phthalate Free, Easy to Clean, 46x35 Inches, Durable, Soft on Paws, Large Litter Mat.

Need to cover some major ground? At 46"x35", it's the largest footprint of any mat on this list, the clear go-to if you need serious ground covered.

If you've got multiple litter boxes lined up, or a cat who treats the box like a launch pad, you need a mat with real square footage — and LittleTiger's XL Super Size mat delivers exactly that. It's sized to comfortably cover multiple boxes without leaving bare floor exposed on the edges. It's phthalate-free and designed to hold up to a proper garden-hose rinse when things get messy, not just a light vacuuming. If square footage is your priority over anything fancy in the design, this is the one to grab.

  • At 46"x35", it's the largest mat in this entire roundup, big enough to comfortably cover multiple litter boxes side by side.
  • The grooves and mesh surface are built to pull litter off your cat's paws as they walk across, same trapping concept as the smaller mats here with a lot more coverage.
  • It cleans up several different ways depending on the mess — vacuum for everyday litter, garden hose for a deeper rinse.
  • The surface is soft enough underfoot that it shouldn't discourage cats from actually walking on it rather than around it.
  • The backing is designed to stay put on hard floors instead of bunching or sliding as your cat comes and goes.
  • Being this large means it takes up meaningfully more real floor space than every other mat on this list, so measure your area before ordering — it won't work in a tight bathroom or closet litter box setup.

Most Durable

PetFusion ToughGrip Waterproof Cat Litter Mat

PetFusion ToughGrip Waterproof Cat Litter Matt with Inner Channels & Raised Outer Lip | XL | Premium Grade Silicone | Housebreaking Cat Supplies Needs

The PetFusion ToughGrip silicone construction owners consistently describe as tough enough to survive years of daily use, and the one mat here you could genuinely put a hose (or in a pinch, a power washer) to.

The ToughGrip breaks from the standard litter-mat playbook a little — instead of loops or mesh designed to grab litter, it's really more of a flexible, low-profile silicone tray, with raised ridges and an outer lip doing the work of holding litter in. That silicone construction is also what makes it far and away one of the most durable mats on this list — it's practically impossible for a cat to damage through normal use, and cleanup is as simple as sweeping, vacuuming, or picking the whole thing up and dumping it out.

It even folds in half with a built-in spout, so you can pour clean litter straight back into the box instead of scooping it by hand. If you've got a cat who's rough on mats or you just want something built to last years instead of months, this is the one.

  • The FDA-grade silicone construction is fully waterproof, so nothing leaks through to the floor even with a messy accident.
  • It's genuinely tough — owners consistently describe it holding up to years of daily use without tearing or breaking down.
  • The fold-and-pour spout design makes it easy to funnel trapped litter straight back into the box instead of sweeping it up separately.
  • It's anti-microbial, non-toxic, and odor-resistant, which matters more than it sounds like once litter starts sitting on any mat for a while.
  • The oversized 38"x26" footprint is big enough that several owners use it to cover two litter boxes, or even a robotic litter box, at once.
  • It runs pricier than most fabric or mesh-style mats on this list, and a few owners note the actual size measures just a touch smaller than the stated dimensions — worth keeping in mind if you're planning around an exact fit.

Best for Multi-Cat & Foster Households

Pawkin Extra Large Phthalate Free Cat Litter Mat

Pawkin Cat Litter Mat, Patented Design with Litter Lock Mesh, Extra Large, Durable, Easy to Clean, Soft, Fits Under Litter Box, Litter Free Floors, Gray

This is the mat that keeps showing up in reviews from people running multiple litter boxes at once, and it tracks with what I've personally seen fostering cats myself.

Pawkin has been a mainstay in this category for years, and it uses the same "grab and pull" style as some of the bigger names here, but it's earned its own loyal following, especially among owners managing more than one litter box at a time. That's not a coincidence — reviewers running multi-cat and foster households in particular report years of repeated washing, even bleach sanitizing, without the mat falling apart. That tracks with what I saw myself during my own years fostering cats: when litter boxes are getting heavy daily traffic from more than one cat, you need something that can take a beating and keep working, and this is exactly the kind of mat that holds up to that. It's a small, family-owned business too, which is a nice bonus if that matters to you.

  • The Litter Lock mesh design is effective at trapping and holding onto litter, even under heavy multi-cat use.
  • It's independently lab-tested phthalate-free, so you're not second-guessing what your cat's paws are touching every day.
  • It holds up to serious cleaning — reviewers report years of repeated machine-washing and even bleach sanitizing without it breaking down.
  • The non-slip backing keeps it in place even with more active or multiple cats using it throughout the day.
  • It's a small, US family-owned business that donates to animal shelters, if supporting that kind of company factors into your decision.
  • If you live somewhere cold, hosing it off outdoors for a deep clean isn't really practical for much of the year, so you'll be doing that cleanup indoors instead. Make sure you shake the litter off completely, don't want that going down your drain.

Most Versatile

Garoopion Silicone Cat Litter Mat

Garoopion Silicone Cat Litter Mat 34×22 inch, Easy to Clean, Gray | Waterproof Silicone Mat with Raised Edges, Catch Litter, Protect Floor from Urine, Multi-Use for Dog/Sink/Kitchen/Boots

it's explicitly designed to double as a feeding mat or general household mat too, not just a litter mat, which none of the other picks on this list are built to do.

Garoopion's silicone mat is a lighter-weight, easy-to-clean option that adds some genuine flexibility most mats on this list don't bother with. Its raised edges are built to keep water and urine from seeping past the mat's border, and the silicone material wipes, sweeps, or rinses clean without much effort. What sets it apart from most of the other mats here is that it's explicitly marketed as multi-use — the same mat that catches litter can double as a feeding mat elsewhere in the house if you ever want to repurpose it. It's a nice option if you like the idea of buying one mat that can pull double duty.

  • The raised-edge design is built specifically to stop water and urine from seeping past the mat's border onto your floor.
  • It's gentle on paws, which matters if your cat is the type to avoid a mat that feels rough or scratchy underfoot.
  • Cleanup is simple — vacuum, sweep, or rinse it off depending on how messy things got.
  • It's explicitly designed as a multi-use mat, so it can double as a feeding mat or general household mat if you ever want to repurpose it.
  • It's a manageable mid-size at 34"x22", easy to fit into tighter spaces without overwhelming a small bathroom or laundry room.
  • Silicone naturally has a firmer feel than the plush loop-style mats elsewhere on this list, so cats used to a softer surface may need a short adjustment period.

The Customer Favorite

Gorilla Grip Premium Non-Slip Cat Litter Mat

GORILLA GRIP Cat Litter Mat, Coiled Mesh Trapping Mats, 35x23 Gray | Litter Box Mat, Soft on Paws, Scatter Control for Less Mess, Phthalate Free, Ultra Deep Catch Grooves, Rinse or Vacuum Clean

It's one of the best-reviewed picks in this entire category, and the sheer number of size and shape options it's sold in tells you it's a brand that's found real staying power with cat owners.

Gorilla Grip might make you think of surfboard wax before cat gear, but don't let the name throw you — this is one of the best-reviewed litter mats you'll find, and it's easy to see why once you look at what it's actually doing. The deep grooves and mesh surface are genuinely effective at pulling litter off paws, and the non-slip backing does exactly what it promises, staying put instead of bunching up as your cat comes and goes.

It's also sold in an unusually wide range of sizes and shapes, from extra-small up through jumbo, corner, and half-circle versions, so there's a real chance you can match this brand specifically to your exact litter box setup instead of settling for a generic rectangle.

  • The deep grooves and mesh design capture litter both kicked out of the box and stuck to paws, doing more work than a plain rug or single-layer mat.
  • The non-slip backing keeps the mat itself in place, so the mess stays contained instead of sliding across your floor.
  • It's water-resistant, which helps protect your actual floor underneath from scratching and spills, not just from tracked litter.
  • The material is soft enough on paws that cats generally don't avoid it the way they sometimes do with stiffer mats.
  • It's sold in an unusually wide range of sizes and shapes, including corner and half-circle options, so it's easier than most brands here to match to your specific litter box footprint.
  • With that many size and shape variants available on one listing, it's worth double-checking you've selected the right one before ordering — it's an easy mistake to make.

Best Budget Pick

Niubya Premium Cat Litter Mat

Niubya Premium Cat Litter Mat, Litter Box Mat with Non-Slip and Waterproof Backing, Litter Trapping Mat Soft on Kitty Paws and Easy to Clean, Cat Mat Traps Litter from Box

It keeps the price low without cutting the basics: trapping grooves, a non-slip waterproof backing, and no unnecessary extras.

Niubya's mat is exactly what you want if you just need something affordable that gets the job done without a lot of extra bells and whistles. It uses litter-trapping grooves and a non-slip, waterproof backing to handle the basics well, all without a premium price tag attached.

It's sold in a few different sizes, which is genuinely useful if you've got a small setup, but it also means you need to pay attention to make sure you're actually ordering the larger option if that's what your litter box needs. Once you've got the right size selected, it's a solid, budget-conscious way to cover the basics.

  • The litter-trapping grooves and mesh material do a competent job pulling litter off paws before it spreads across your floor.
  • The non-slip, waterproof backing keeps it in place and protects against accidents soaking through.
  • It's an Amazon's Choice listing, which at minimum signals it's a reasonably popular option in its category.
  • It's sold in multiple sizes, so there's flexibility if your setup is on the smaller side and you don't need a huge mat.
  • It's one of the more affordably priced picks in this roundup if cost is your main deciding factor.
  • The default size shown on the listing is noticeably smaller than what "extra large" implies — you'll need to actively select the larger size variant if you want real coverage around a standard-size box.

Best for Easy Litter Disposal

Waretary Cat Litter Mat

Waretary Cat Litter Mat, 36"x30", Waterproof, Scatter Control, Grey | Double Layer, Urine-Proof, Non-Slip, Durable, Easy to Clean, Paw-Friendly, Safe & Odorless, Fits Large Litter Boxes

Its "EZ Open Edge" double-layer design lets you lift the top layer off completely and dump or recycle the trapped litter, which no other mat on this list makes quite this simple.

Waretary's mat is a standard rectangle rather than a corner-fitting shape, so it's worth knowing upfront if you specifically need something to tuck into a corner litter box setup. What it brings instead is a genuinely useful "EZ Open Edge" double-layer design, letting you lift the top layer off entirely to dump or recycle whatever litter got trapped underneath, rather than shaking or vacuuming it out.

It's made of soft, washable EVA material that's gentle on paws, and it's phthalate-free with no chemical smell out of the box. If easy disposal matters more to you than a corner-specific shape, it's a solid, sizable option.

  • The double-layer "EZ Open Edge" design lets you lift the top layer off completely to dump or recycle trapped litter, quicker than shaking a single-layer mat out.
  • The EVA material is soft and washable, gentle enough on paws that it shouldn't discourage cats from walking on it.
  • It's phthalate-free and doesn't carry the chemical "new mat" smell some plastic mats have out of the box.
  • At 36"x30", it's a generously sized mat that covers plenty of ground around a standard litter box.
  • It comes with a 3-month free exchange plus a 12-month warranty, more of a safety net than most mats in this roundup offer.
  • It's a standard rectangle rather than a corner-fitting shape, so if your litter box setup specifically calls for a mat that tucks into a corner, this one won't do that job.

Easiest to Store

UPSKY Large Cat Litter Mat Trapper

UPSKY Large Cat Litter Mat Trapper 35"×23", Waterproof, Non-Slip, Gray | Large Litter Box Mat, Foldable Trapping Mat, Anti-slip Design, For Cat Litter Boxes and Sensitive Paws, Easy to Clean

It's built with a foldable design most of the other mats here don't offer, which matters if you need to tuck it away or travel with it.

UPSKY's litter mat trapper covers the budget-friendly, large-format territory well, without asking you to spend much to get there. It's made of recyclable PVC and built with an anti-slip backing that's gentle on sensitive paws.

What sets it apart a bit is the foldable design, which makes it easier to store flat or tuck away temporarily than most of the rigid or bulky mats elsewhere on this list. If you need something you can fold up when it's not in use, or move between spaces occasionally, this is worth a look.

  • The mesh-and-grip surface is built to catch litter off paws as your cat exits the box.
  • It's made of recyclable PVC, a small plus if you care about the material's end-of-life impact.
  • The anti-slip backing keeps it from sliding around while still being gentle on sensitive paws.
  • At 35"x23", it covers a solid amount of ground around a standard litter box.
  • The foldable design makes it easier to store flat or move between rooms than most of the bulkier mats on this list.
  • It's only sold in one size (35"x23"), so unlike several other mats on this list that offer multiple size options, you're locked into this footprint whether or not it's the ideal fit for your setup.

Easiest on Paws

PetFusion SmartGrip Cat Litter Mat

PetFusion SmartGrip EXTRA LARGE Cat Litter Mat, Gray, (35 x 24"). [Easy cleaning, Stylish Pattern, Soft on Paws for Finicky Cats] - No Phthalates or VCMs

This one skips the "grab and hold" texture most mats use in favor of a softer cushioned surface, specifically so cats won't avoid or jump over it.

The SmartGrip takes a different approach than most of the mats on this list — instead of loops or mesh designed to grab at litter, it uses a softer, cushioned material with an outer catch channel to stop litter that's already rolling or bouncing away. The upside of that softer surface is that it's noticeably easier on paws, which matters if you've got a cat who's picky about texture and tends to avoid or leap over rougher mats.

PetFusion also makes a point of stating they don't buy incentivized reviews, a small but honest stance worth noting in a category where that's more common than you'd think. Just know going in that this one's sold through third-party marketplace listings rather than a standard direct listing, so pricing and availability can be a little less predictable than the other mats here.

  • The soft, cushioned material is genuinely easier on paws than mesh or loop-style mats, which can help cats who otherwise avoid walking on litter mats.
  • The outer catch channel does a good job stopping litter that's already rolling or bouncing before it reaches the floor.
  • Cleaning is simple — sweep it, or wipe it down with a damp sponge, no hosing required for everyday messes.
  • The closed-pore material resists moisture absorption, which helps it stay more mildew-resistant than some competing designs over time.
  • It comes in a couple of colors and styles, giving you a little more choice than most single-style mats on this list.
  • It's sold through third-party "See All Buying Options" marketplace sellers rather than a standard Buy Box listing, which tends to mean a higher price and less consistent availability than the other mats featured here.

The Lightest Pick

PetLike Cat Litter Box Mat

PetLike Cat Litter Box Mat, Thick Kitty Litter Trapping Mat, Durable,Waterproof &Washable with Non-Slip Backing, Soft on Kitty Paws and Easy to Clean, BPA Free 30x18,Pink

Coming in at under two pounds and a thin profile, it's the easiest mat on this list to pick up, shake out, or move around, which matters most if your litter box lives in a tight space.

PetLike's mat is the pick for tight spaces on this list. It uses a familiar grooves-and-mesh approach to capture litter from the box and from paws, but it's built to be genuinely lightweight and thin, which makes it easy to lift, shake out, or shift around a small bathroom or laundry room setup.

It's also independently lab-tested phthalate- and BPA-free, so you're not trading safety for the lighter build. If your litter box lives somewhere with limited floor space, this is a sensible, low-bulk option.

  • The grooves-and-mesh design captures litter from both the box itself and off your cat's paws as they walk away.
  • It's independently lab-tested phthalate- and BPA-free, worth knowing for any cat that likes to chew or lie on the mat.
  • At roughly 1.77 pounds and a thin 0.28" profile, it's noticeably easier to lift and shake out than the thicker mats on this list.
  • Cleaning options are flexible — shake it, vacuum it, or give it a quick rinse depending on the mess.
  • Its slim profile makes it a good fit for tight bathroom or laundry-room litter box setups where a bulkier mat wouldn't tuck in as neatly.
  • That same lightweight, thin build means it doesn't have quite the substantial, heavy-duty feel of some of the thicker mats elsewhere on this list, so if durability under serious daily wear is your top priority, one of those might suit you better.

Best Half-Circle Fit

DM Cat Paw Print Half Circle

DM Cat Paw Print Litter Box Mat,Door Mat, Kitty Litter Rug,Half Circle,23.5x14.25 Inches

The half-circle paw silhouette is purpose-built to sit flush against a wall or the front of a litter box, not just a novelty shape.

DM's half-circle paw print mat is here for anyone who wants something that looks a little more intentional than a plain rectangle sitting next to the litter box. The half-circle silhouette isn't just for looks, either — it's genuinely useful for tucking flush against a wall or the base of a litter box rather than sticking out awkwardly the way a full rectangle sometimes does.

It's made of durable, water-resistant PVC with a full-bottom slip-free grip, so it holds up to daily use despite the more novelty-leaning shape. If your litter box sits against a wall, that shape ends up doing double duty as both function and decor.

  • The half-circle paw-print silhouette fits flush against a wall or the front of a litter box, which can look a lot more intentional than a plain rectangular mat.
  • The PVC construction is durable and water-resistant, so it holds up to regular litter box traffic without the shape compromising function.
  • The full-bottom slip-free grip backing keeps it in place even with an active cat coming and going.
  • Cleaning is simple — shake it out or vacuum it, no special care needed.
  • The soft, cozy surface is comfortable enough underfoot that it shouldn't discourage cats from walking across it.
  • The half-circle shape only really works if your litter box setup allows for a flat edge against a wall — it's not the right pick if your box sits out in open floor space where a full rectangle would give better coverage on all sides.

DM Paw-Shaped Cat Litter Box Debris Catcher Mat, 15.75x11.75 Inches (Gray)

its genuinely compact footprint makes it the go-to on this list for setups where a full-size mat just won't fit.

This paw-print mat is the compact, decorative-shape option on this list, built for litter boxes that live somewhere too tight for any of the larger mats here. Rather than trying to force a big mat into a small space, it embraces a genuinely small footprint — a single paw-print silhouette rather than a full rectangle. It's made of the same water-resistant PVC and slip-free grip backing as the half-circle pick above, just in a smaller single-paw shape. If you like the idea of a shaped, decorative mat but need something a little smaller, this is the pick.

  • The single paw-print silhouette gives the same decorative, shaped-mat look as the half-circle option above, just in a smaller footprint.
  • The water-resistant PVC construction holds up to regular use and daily accidents without breaking down quickly.
  • The full-bottom slip-free grip backing keeps it in place under normal foot and paw traffic.
  • Cleanup is simple — shake it out or vacuum it as needed.
  • Its compact size makes it a genuinely good fit for small bathrooms, closets, or other tight litter box setups where a larger mat just won't fit.
  • The unique shape is cute, but it also makes it so that each corner/groove in the paw is a stress point when you pick it up. This means it will crack/break more easily over time at these points.
  • Its compact size means it won't offer much coverage around a bigger litter box, so it's really meant for tight spots rather than general use. Stock on this specific listing has also run low before — if it's unavailable when you check, the half-circle DM mat above is a solid same-brand backup.

Q&A for Litter Mats

Why do I need a litter mat?

Two Words: Litter Tracking

A litter mat is the first line of defense in combating litter tracking in your house. If you don't want to step on cat litter throughout your whole house then you'll absolutely need a litter mat.

Litter mats will catch a huge portion of the litter as your cat enters and exits the litter box. If you don't have a hooded or covered litter box then they'll also do a great job of catching some of the litter your cat kicks out of the box while doing her business.

Without a litter mat you'll find litter everywhere your cats go. Even in the corners of your house that are farthest from the litter box you'll find bits of it. Every cat owner should have a litter mat right next to or outside of their litter box.

Will my cat actually use a litter mat, or will she just walk around it?

Some cats need a minute to warm up to it, and that's a real, recurring thing, not just a one-off complaint — it shows up in feedback on both the iPrimio and Pawkin mats above, where owners specifically mention a short adjustment period before their cat would walk across the mat instead of hopping over it.

It's actually part of why the PetFusion SmartGrip exists at all — it trades the grabby mesh texture other mats use for a softer, cushioned surface specifically so pickier cats are less likely to avoid it. If your cat gives a new mat some side-eye at first, give it a week or two before writing it off.

How do I know what size mat I actually need, and why do some "extra large" mats show up smaller than expected?

This trips people up more than almost anything else in this category, and it's not just one bad listing — a couple of the mats in this roundup default to a smaller size unless you specifically pick a larger variant (Niubya's page shows a small size by default despite the "extra large" branding, and Waretary's runs into the same issue), so always double-check the size selector before checking out.

It's common enough that on at least one similar litter mat listing we checked, the seller's own copy calls incorrect sizing the single most common return reason in this entire product category — so this isn't a fluke, it's worth actively checking every time.

Are litter mats safe for my cat, and will a new one smell like chemicals out of the box?

The large majority of the mats in this roundup are independently lab-tested and marketed as phthalate- and BPA-free, which is genuinely worth confirming on whatever mat you land on, not just the ones featured here.

As for smell, it's a fair thing to wonder about with anything plastic or PVC — Waretary specifically calls out that it has no chemical smell straight out of the packaging, which is the kind of detail worth looking for on any listing you're considering. If you're sensitive to new-plastic smell in general, airing a new mat out for a day before it goes into daily rotation is a reasonable habit regardless of brand.

Will a litter mat work with the type of litter I already use?

Mostly, yes — most mats in this category, including several here, are built around standard clumping clay litter, since that's what sticks to paws and tracks the most. If you've moved to something less traditional — crystal, pellet, corn, or wheat-based litter — a few mats in this roundup, like the Motsamla trap-and-pour style, specifically call out compatibility across multiple litter types in their own listing copy, so it's worth checking a mat's own description before assuming it'll trap something shaped very differently from standard clay.

Can a litter mat actually hold up to multiple cats or heavy daily use?

Some genuinely can, and this is where the mats in this roundup start to separate from each other. iPrimio, Pawkin, and the PetFusion ToughGrip all have real owner feedback describing years of daily use, including regular deep cleaning (Pawkin owners specifically mention bleach-sanitizing it), without the mat breaking down — and Pawkin in particular keeps showing up in feedback from multi-cat and foster households running heavy daily traffic through more than one box.

If you're outfitting more than one litter box or have several cats using the same setup, it's worth leaning toward one of those three over a more novelty-shaped or budget-first option.

Is a litter mat enough to stop litter tracking on its own?

A good mat handles a big chunk of the problem, but it's rarely the whole story — litter box style, the type of litter you use, and your cat's own habits (some cats like to hang over the box's edge to pee, which a mat alone won't fully catch) all play a role too.

For the fuller picture beyond just picking a mat, our guide on how to stop cat litter tracking covers the rest of it — the post you're reading already links out to that guide in its own intro, so this keeps the two consistent with each other.

What Types of Litter Mats Are There?

There are two core types of litter mats out there:

1) Grabbing: The grabbing style of litter mats are designed with a bunch of interlocking or interweaved fibers that essentially grab and hold onto litter as your cat walks across the mat. This is the more traditional style mat and they've been around for ages.

  • Biggest Pro: It will actually grab litter off your cat's paws as they walk across it.
  • Biggest Con: More annoying to dump litter out of as it is designed to hold onto it.

2) Trapping: Trapping style mats are not exactly new, but they are definitely newer. Instead of grabbing at the litter they are designed to let the litter fall into them and then trap it in between the different layers of the mats.

  • Biggest Pro: Super easy to clean litter out of it.
Biggest Con: Litter has to basically fall into it for it to work.

If you've never had a litter mat before and you're looking for a recommendation then I'd go with a grabbing style mat.

Does the Litter Matter?

There are a bunch of different kinds of litter out there on the market. They range from paper to pine to the traditional clay clumping style litter that is the most well known by far. There are even absorbent crystals that are specifically designed to not be easy to kick around or drag out of the box.

Most litter mats are specifically designed for traditional clay clumping style litters. This is because these litters more traditionally stick to your cat's paws and get tracked out of the box. If you decide to use a different form of litter you'll want to make sure that the holes in trapping style mats will be big enough to catch anything that gets kicked out of the box.

If you're not sure what kind of litter to go with for your first cat then you'll want to ask the shelter or rescue you're adopting from what the cat has been exposed to. Buying the type your cat is used to will minimize litter box problems.

What Mat Is Best For My Cats?

I've of course already given my recommendations above based on my favorite mat as well as by calling out some of the key features and functions of each mat above. If you have special requirements for your cat or based on your location then you can use that information as guidance.

There are of course a couple of other things you should consider when making your purchase:

  • Litter Box Type: When you have an open style litter box you'll definitely want to aim for a larger format litter mat. This ensures more coverage and will help minimize tracking from kicked litter.
  • Short vs Long Haired Cat: Long haired cats tend to get litter stuck in their fur quite easily. The larger the mat is the more opportunity you'll have for the litter to get caught. You'll also tend to want to aim for a grabbing style mat that might help pull litter out of their fur.
  • Cat Age: Young cats and senior cats are far more prone to have urine accidents. Be sure to buy a waterproof style litter mat if you have an older cat.
  • Cat Behavior: Some cats are notorious for sitting on the edge of the litter box to pee. If you know this about your cat be sure to get a larger style mat that is water proof and skid proof.

What are phthalates and why should I care?

Phthalates are a class of chemical plasticizers — added to plastics like PVC/vinyl to make them softer and more flexible instead of rigid. That's exactly why they show up in litter mats: most are PVC-based, and phthalates are what keep them pliable rather than stiff.

The concern is that phthalates aren't chemically bonded to the plastic — they can leach out over time, especially with heat, moisture, or wear (all things a litter mat sees constantly). They're linked to endocrine disruption in humans and animals with enough exposure, which is why "phthalate-free" has become a standard marketing/safety claim on pet products like these — manufacturers use alternative plasticizers or materials (like the silicone in the PetFusion ToughGrip mat) that skip phthalates entirely.

Wrapping up on the Best Cat Litter Mat

Choosing a litter mat is a key part of combating litter tracking throughout your house. The market is flooded with all types of mats and in all honesty there’s a lot of overlap between feature and function.  I’d say the key things to keep in mind are:

  • The size and shape of the space you need to cover
  • Your preferred cleanup method
  • If your cats have urine accidents or not

The Best Budget Carrier

The Amazon Basics Soft Sided Carrier

Amazon Basics Airline Approved Soft-Sided Mesh Pet Travel Carrier with Shoulder Strap, Removable Washable Fleece Pad, Top Opening, Ventilation for Dog, Cat, up to 22 pounds, 19.7Lx12Wx12H in., Black

If your carrier's only job is getting your cat to the vet and back a couple of times a year, you don't need to overspend on it. The Amazon Basics Soft Sided Carrier is about as no-frills as carriers get, but it covers the basics well and won't dent your wallet doing it.

It comes in two sizes, so measure your cat before you order instead of guessing — a carrier that's too snug defeats the whole purpose. I wouldn't reach for this one for a cross-country flight, but for routine trips, it's genuinely hard to beat.

A couple items worth noting on this one:

  • Lightweight enough to carry comfortably on the shoulder strap or the standard handles, whichever your cat tolerates better on a given day.
  • Multiple entry points mean you're not stuck coaxing a reluctant cat in from just one direction.
  • Ventilation is solid for a carrier at this price, with enough airflow to keep your cat comfortable on shorter trips.
  • The included pad is machine-washable, which matters more than you'd think once an anxious cat has an accident inside.
  • Folds down flat for storage, so it's not taking up permanent closet real estate between trips.

A few things worth cautioning you about:

  • The bottom is thin enough that a heavier cat will feel every bump in the road, and the mesh isn't tough enough to stop a determined cat from clawing or chewing a hole through it.

The Most Extra Room

The PetsFit Expandable Travel Carrier

Petsfit Large Expandable Cat Carrier for Travel, Up to 18 lb | 19 x 12 x 12 in; roomy expandable space with a reinforced frame, locking zippers, interior safety tether and large pocket.

If you’re looking for a soft carrier that is a hefty chunk larger and has more comfort than something like the Amazon Basics carrier than the Petsfit Expandable is a great carrier to consider. Not only does it include all the major perks of the Basics carrier, but it also has some cool features like the expandable side area that gives your cat a big bump up in real estate space inside.

This is exceptionally useful when you have a long layover or a long trip in a car and you don’t want to let your cat out, but still want her to have some space for comfort or a bowl of water or food. There’s a full video review available below, but the bullets below detail it out pretty well:

  • The expandable side panel adds real usable space for your cat to turn around, stretch out, or just get some distance from the "trapped in a bag" feeling.
  • The support frame pops out when you need the carrier to shrink back down for tight spaces, like under an airplane seat.
  • Comes with the same washable pad, shoulder strap, and multiple entry points as the Basics carrier, just in a roomier package.
  • Folds down flat for storage once the frame is removed.
  • There is a pad included that can be tossed in the washing machineIt breaks down easily to take up minimum space
  • It does fit under most airline seats (when the expander isn’t out), but you’d have to check each airline specifically to verify (and you will likely need to remove the frame)

A few things worth cautioning you about:

  • It costs meaningfully more than the Basics carrier
  • If you are traveling on a really consistent basis, as with any product made of nylon, the edges will fray and the frame will start to push through

The Shelter Standard

The Petmate Two Door Top Loader

Petmate Two Door Plastic Pet Kennel for Small Dogs and Cats, 24in, Blue | Top and Front Loading USA Made Crate Built from Recycled EcoTEC Plastic

Petmate is an incredibly well known company and I see these carriers in use on a consistent basis at the shelter I volunteer at all the time.  Not only are they well designed, but they are incredibly durable and they come in a varying set of sizes.

I’d highly recommend you go with the 24 inch version for any adult cat and if you have an extra large cat you might want to consider something even bigger than this. That being said, these carriers are constructed solidly and perform extremely well. You can also check out the video review below.

Key features worth noting:

  • Very solid construction using screws to hold the pieces together
  • The ventilation is top notch with it having a grated door and tons of small air holes
  • It has both top and front entrances for those cats that don't like being loaded in from the front
  • Easy to add your cats favorite blanket or bed inside with plenty of room
  • Super easy to clean after a trip if necessary

A few things worth cautioning you about:

  • As with any hard carrier there is no shoulder strap so it can be annoying to carry it a long distance
  • Not fit for airplane travel due to the size and the lack of flexibility (most hard carriers are not)

Best Hands Free option

Petsfit Comfort Cat Backpack

Petsfit Pet Backpack Carrier Easy-Fit Dog Travel Backpack Carrier for Hiking Walking Cycling Suitable for Small Medium Dogs Cats and Rabbits up to 22 Pounds, Green

If you've ever tried to walk any real distance with a cat carrier digging into one shoulder, you already understand the appeal of a backpack. The Petsfit Comfort Cat Backpack puts the weight on both shoulders instead of one, which makes a real difference over any kind of distance.

It's built for cats 15 pounds and under — I'd stick close to that ceiling, since anything bigger starts to feel genuinely cramped inside. It's a great option if you're the type walking your cat somewhere on a regular basis rather than just driving them to the vet twice a year.

  • Super easy to transport your cat in because all the weight is on your shoulders
  • Both top and front loading, though admittedly the front loading is small and not easy to use
  • Has a harness attachment & the front window unzips for better viewing (be very careful with this as your cat can and will jump out if they want to)
  • This particular backpack has solid ventilation as well with 4 major ventilation gratings
  • The bottom is fully removable for easy washing and cleaning
  • Has additional stability straps for your waist and chest to keep the backpack tightly against you
  • Breaks down for easy storage just like a regular soft carrier

A few items worth cautioning you about:

  • There are no pouches or pockets to carry anything like snacks or treats
  • When upright it will be cramped for a cat to lay down other than in a tiny ball
  • There is no handle to carry it if you don’t want it on your shoulders

Best for Senior Cats

ZENY Foldable Pet Stroller

ZENY Foldable Pet Stroller, Cat/Dog Stroller with 4 Wheels | Pet Travel Carrier Strolling Cart with Storage Basket, Cup Holder (Grey)

The original stroller pick in this spot for years was the Paws & Pals City Walk, which was genuinely the most popular pet stroller I'd come across — a favorite for older cats getting safe outdoor air, and for bonded pairs of cats who'd rather ride together than get split into separate carriers.

That exact listing has gone out of stock, so we're pointing you toward the ZENY Foldable Pet Stroller instead, which keeps the same core idea: four wheels, an enclosed and ventilated riding area, and none of the weight resting on your arms or shoulders.

It's a genuinely different category from a traditional carrier, worth considering if you're regularly taking a senior cat, a nervous cat, or two cats out together rather than just to the vet.

  • Four-wheel design means you're pushing, not carrying, which matters if you've got an older or heavier cat, or you're taking more than one cat out at once.
  • A built-in storage basket gives you somewhere to stash a water bottle, treats, or anything else you'd want along for a longer outing.
  • The included cup holder is a small touch, but a genuinely convenient one if you're using the stroller for actual walks rather than just short trips.
  • Folds down for storage and transport when you're not using it.
  • Well suited to bonded cats who get anxious separated into two different carriers, letting them stay together for the ride.

Cautions:

  • treat the fold-down mechanism and wheel durability as promising rather than fully proven, and check the enclosure for any small gaps before letting a determined kitten near it unsupervised.

Best Two Kitten Carrier

Bejibear Cat Carrier for 2 Kittens

Bejibear Large Cat Carrier for 2 Cats, Soft Side Pet Carrier for Cats Small Dog, Collapsible Travel Dog Carrier Bag TSA Airline Approved Dog Carrier Backpack,Grey

The old Pet Magasin Collapsible carrier that used to hold this spot combined a firm hard-sided frame with the fold-flat convenience of a soft carrier — a nice combination, but that exact listing is gone now.

The Bejibear Large Cat Carrier for 2 Cats fills the gap with a different angle worth considering if you've got more than one cat: it's sized generously enough for two, still collapsible for storage, and built to TSA's airline-approved dimensions.

If you've been stuffing two kittens into a carrier meant for one, or splitting them into two separate bags they hate being apart in, this is the kind of upgrade worth a look.

  • Sized to comfortably fit two kittens together, useful for bonded pairs who get more anxious separated than they do sharing a carrier while they're growing up
  • Soft-sided and collapsible, so it folds down flat for storage between trips instead of permanently taking up space.
  • Built to TSA airline-approved dimensions, worth knowing if travel is part of why you're shopping for a carrier at all.
  • Backpack-style straps give you a hands-free way to carry it, on top of standard handles.
  • The grey color and simple design keep it from looking like a novelty item if you're carrying it through an airport.

Best for Anxious Cats

"You've got This" Cat Carrier

You've got This Cat Carrier with Privacy Flaps for Nervous Fur-Kids. Top-Load Quick-in. 360° Airy Mesh Windows Let Cats See You & Reduce Travel Anxiety. Rip-Stop Fabric & Lockable Zips Hug Securely

The "You've got This" Cat Carrier has a focus on just being a genuinely good carrier for an anxious cat. It leans hard into reducing travel stress specifically, with privacy flaps and a top-load design that doesn't require wrestling a scared cat in through a front door they can see coming. If your cat turns into a puddle of anxiety the second the carrier comes out of the closet, this is built with exactly that cat in mind.

  • Top-load design lets you lower a nervous cat straight down into the carrier instead of coaxing them through a front opening they can see and dread.
  • Privacy flaps let you close off the mesh windows when your cat needs to hide from the world rather than watch it go by.
  • 360-degree mesh windows give your cat the option to see you and stay oriented when they're feeling brave enough to look out.
  • Rip-stop fabric and lockable zips are built specifically with escape-artist cats in mind.
  • Has by far the largest base of owner feedback of any pick in this section, a good sign this isn't a flash-in-the-pan listing.

Cautions:

  • Because it's designed around flexibility (privacy flaps, multiple openings), it's a slightly more complex carrier to get the hang of than a basic single-entry bag, so take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with it before your cat's actually inside.

Best Panoramic Views

PetLuv Premium Travel Carrier

Cat & Dog Pet Carrier, Fits 2 Cats or Medium Dog Comfortably, Large, Navy | Soft-sided, Car Travel, Vet Visits, 4 Doors, Privacy Windows, Safety Leash, Seatbelt loops, Plush Bed, Locking Zippers, Folds

Some cats handle travel fine. Others turn every car ride into a full meltdown, and if yours is the second kind, the PetLuv Premium Travel Carrier is built with exactly that cat in mind.

The roomy design and all-around windows mean your cat isn't stuck staring at a wall of fabric the whole ride, and there are enough anxiety-focused touches here that it's clearly designed by people who've dealt with a stressed-out cat before. It runs a little larger and pricier than the basics, but if travel stress is the actual problem you're solving for, it's worth the upgrade.

  • Optimum ventilation and maximum sightseeing with all-around windows
  • There are window flaps that can roll down and close across each window
  • It also has tear-resistant heavy duty rubber mesh for those cats that may attempt and escape
  • The zippers lock together to keep the genius cats from popping the carrier open
  • There are built in seat belt loops for car travel security
  • It measures in at a Length of 24", Height of 16" and Depth of 16"

A few items worth noting on this model:

  • If you plan to carry a heavy cat or multiple cats then be prepared for the bottom to sag a bit, there's no bracing built in for this

Best Rolling Carrier

Petsfit Rolling Cat Carrier w/ Removable Wheels

PETSFIT Extra Large Pet Carrier with Wheels- Rolling Dog Carrier for 2 Small Dogs, Large Cat Carrier on Wheels with Adjustable Safety Rope & Waterproof Bottom (𝑵𝒐𝒕 𝑨𝒊𝒓𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅)

If you're tired of a shoulder strap digging in, or your cat's simply too heavy to comfortably carry very far, the Petsfit Rolling Cat Carrier solves that by letting you pull instead of carry. It functions basically like a small rolling suitcase, and the wheels pop off entirely if you need to store it flat or just want the option to carry it by hand for a stretch.

It's rated to hold pets up to 28 pounds, which covers most cats with plenty of margin, but measure your own cat rather than assuming. One important note up front: this is not an airline-approved carrier, so if you're flying, look elsewhere on this list rather than at this one.

  • You can easily pull your cat around without any weight on your back or shoulders
  • The handle measures just under 35 inches long so you've got lots of space
  • The carrier folds down flat and you can remove the wheels for storage purposes
  • It is rated to hold a pet up to 28 pounds, but be sure to measure first
  • Because it zips together you can load your cat from almost any direction

A few things worth noting for you potential buyers:

  • When you take it off the wheeled base it doesn't have a firm bottom, it may sag
  • This carrier specifically calls out that it will not fit under an airline seat

Best Airline-Approved Expandable

Airline Approved  4-Sider Expandable

The Jet Sitter that used to hold this spot built its whole reputation on fitting under a United Airlines seat, and I get why that mattered — I've flown cross-country with my own cats on United more than once, and the carrier you bring genuinely makes or breaks how smooth that day goes.

That exact listing has since gone dead, so we didn't want to just drop the category along with it. This Airline Approved Pet Carrier steps into the same role: TSA-compliant, sized to work under most major airline seats, and expandable on four sides once you're off the plane. If air travel with your cat is genuinely why you're shopping right now, this is one of the stronger picks on this whole list for that specific job

  • Sized and marketed specifically to meet airline under-seat requirements, which is exactly the box you need checked before you book a flight with your cat.
  • Expands on all four sides once you're off the plane, giving your cat real extra room the rest of the trip.
  • Comes with a removable fleece pad, so cleanup after an accident doesn't mean scrubbing the whole carrier.
  • Built-in pockets give you somewhere to stash documents, a leash, or treats without a separate bag.
  • Collapsible design folds down for storage between trips.

There is one major item worth cautioning you about with this model:

  • "Airline approved" varies by airline and even by specific aircraft, so confirm your exact carrier's under-seat dimensions against your specific airline before you fly rather than assuming the label covers you everywhere.

Best Budget Airline Pick

TSA Approved Soft-Sided Carrier

Cat Dog Carriers Soft-Sided Pet Carrier Large Cats for Medium Big Cat Small Dog Puppy up to 16lbs TSA Airline Approved Animal Collapsible Cat Carrier Carriers Travel Carrier Cat Bag (17x11x11)

The old Pet Magasin Luxury TSA carrier was a small, lightweight option built to squeeze under nearly any airline seat, and its replacement keeps that same job description. This soft-sided carrier is TSA and airline-approved, rated up to 16 pounds, and collapses flat when you're not using it, all at one of the lowest price points on this entire list.

It's not built for long-haul comfort or a giant cat, but if you need a straightforward, budget-friendly carrier that'll actually get you and your cat through security without a hassle, this covers it.

  • TSA and airline-approved sizing takes the guesswork out of whether it'll fit under your seat.
  • Rated to hold cats and small dogs up to 16 pounds, which covers most cats without much to spare.
  • Collapses completely flat for storage when you're not traveling.
  • One of the most affordable options on this entire list, which matters if you only need a carrier occasionally.
  • Has great ventilation and two methods for carrying it (shoulder strap included)
  • Compact 17"x11"x11" dimensions keep it easy to maneuver through a crowded airport or terminal.

A couple of things to consider before your make your purchase:

  • It only has the ability to load your cat from the top
  • Its small size that makes it airline-friendly also means it won't comfortably fit a larger cat, so measure before you buy rather than assuming "TSA approved" means "one size fits all."

Best Easy-Load Hard Carrier

SportPet Hard Sided Triangle Traveler

SportPet LARGE Hard-Sided Travel Cat Carrier - Cat Carrier with Patented Wide Side-Opening Door, Foldable Portable Pet Carrier with Removable Bed for Cats & Small Pets up to 25lbs - Gray/Tan

If you like the security of a hard-sided carrier but you're worried about your cat being stressed out climbing into a tight opening, the SportPet Triangle Traveler solves that with a genuinely huge entrance.

It's the kind of carrier your cat can practically walk right into on their own, rather than something you have to wrestle them through. It's built for trips to the vet, around town, or even a longer car or train trip, and solid plastic construction means cleanup is about as easy as it gets.

It's not built for air travel, but for everything else, it's a strong, no-nonsense hard carrier.

  • Has a huge opening making it easy to load your cat or have her walk right into it
  • Since it is made of solid plastic it is super easy to clean
  • It folds down into a thin briefcase style for easy and compact storage
  • Has numerous sliding locks to ensure your kitty can't slip out like Houdini
  • It measures in at 15.2” L x 18.5” W x 14.2” H

A couple of items worth considering before purchase:

  • This one is not airline approved, so if you're flying, look toward one of the airline-specific picks on this list instead.

Best Extra Legroom

Two Sided Expandable Soft Carrier

MASKEYON Airline Approved Portable Pet Carrier 2 Sides Expandable Soft-Sided Large Cats Carrier Collapsible Kennel Travel TSA Carrier 4 Doors with Removable Pads and 3 Pockets for Puppy Small Dogs

If your cat's the type who wants to actually move around once you're settled in rather than stay balled up for the whole trip, this is the carrier built for that. It's airline-sized to clear TSA and most under-seat requirements while collapsed, but pop both the front and back panels out once you're through security or off the plane and your cat suddenly has a lot more room to stretch, turn around, and stake out a spot.

Four separate entry points also mean you're not stuck coaxing a stubborn cat in from one single opening — top, either side, or the front all work. It earns this label specifically because it's one of the few picks on this list giving your cat real extra square footage without giving up airline compliance to do it.

  • Four points of entry — top, both sides, and the front — so you can load your cat from whichever direction they're least likely to fight you on that day.
  • Expands on two sides once you're settled, giving your cat noticeably more room to stretch out than a fixed-size carrier allows.
  • A steel-strand reinforced frame is built to resist sagging, including keeping the top from caving in when you set a bag on it or sling it over your shoulder.
  • Three removable, washable pads (two side cushions plus a bottom bed) make cleanup after an accident simple, and non-slip pads on the base help keep it from sliding around under an airline seat.
  • The padded, adjustable shoulder strap supports several carry styles — hand, shoulder, luggage strap-on, or a car seatbelt loop — so you're not locked into one way of hauling it.

Worth cautioning you about before purchasing:

  • Owner feedback on this one is genuinely split rather than uniformly glowing — some describe it as roomy and holding its shape well, others report it runs too large for their airline's actual under-seat allowance or feels less sturdy than expected, so it's worth double-checking your specific airline's dimensions and reading a few recent reviews before you travel with it.

Best for Big Cats

Sivlefoss Large Cat Carrier

Sivlefoss Large Cat Carrier, Collapsible Dog Travel Crate Portable Soft-Sided Pet Carrier with Super Soft Warm Plush Mat for Indoor and Outdoor 24x16x16in,Navy Blue

For big cats, I'm recommending the Sivlefoss Large Cat Carrier, which covers the same "big cat" need but takes a completely different approach: instead of a rigid hard-sided kennel, it's a soft-sided, collapsible fabric crate in the same 24-inch size class, built with a plush mat included for comfort.

If you've got a larger cat and you liked the old pick's size range but not necessarily its hard-sided bulk, this is worth a look as a lighter, more packable alternative.

  • Sized at 24"x16"x16", comfortably matching the size range of larger cats that the old hard-sided pick was aimed at.
  • Soft-sided and collapsible, so unlike a rigid kennel, it folds down flat for storage between trips instead of permanently taking up closet or trunk space.
  • Comes with a super-soft plush mat included, adding real comfort that a bare hard-plastic floor doesn't offer.
  • Lighter and easier to carry than a comparable hard-sided kennel of the same size, since it's built from fabric rather than plastic.
  • Suited to both indoor and outdoor use, giving it more flexibility than a carrier built strictly for one setting.

A few things worth cautioning you about:

  • Being soft-sided rather than hard-sided, it won't offer quite the same rigid protection a hard kennel does if your cat is a heavy leaner or a determined scratcher, so weigh that trade-off against your cat's temperament before choosing this over a hard-sided option elsewhere on this list.

Best Outdoor Lounging Setup

Portable 2-in-1 Double Pet Kennel

One for Pets Portable 2-in-1 Double Pet Kennel/Shelter, Fabric, Black/Royal Blue 20"x20"x39" - Car Seat-Belt Fixture Included (Black)

This portable 2-in-1 double kennel/shelter gives your cats two separate compartments they can share or keep apart, with a seat-belt fixture built in for securing it during car travel. It's not something you'll be carrying long distances by hand, but as a home-away-from-home setup for outdoor time or road trips, it fills a real niche the rest of this list doesn't cover.

  • Two separate compartments let you keep cats apart or unzip the middle to let them hang out together, depending on what your specific cats prefer.
  • Seat-belt fixture built in for car travel gives you real security instead of a shelter that slides around the back seat.
  • Roomy 20"x20"x39" footprint gives your cats genuine space to stretch out, rather than just squeeze into.
  • Folds down and includes its own carry bag, so it's not a permanent fixture once you're done with it.
  • Same trusted One for Pets brand as the original Driving Lounge that held this spot for years.

Cautions:

  • It's not built to be carried by hand over any real distance, so think of this as a portable home base you set up rather than a carrier you'll be lugging through an airport.

Frequent Q&A

Why Do I Need a Cat Carrier?

  • Vet Visits: Hopefully you’re getting your cat to the vet on a yearly basis. A carrier is a must have to transport your cat back and forth from vet visits. This includes both standard checkups and shots as well as any random sickness or injury that might arise.
  • Moving: If you happen to be moving sometime in the near future a carrier can be really handy. Cats generally don’t travel well so a carrier is a huge plus.
  • Vacation: If you happen to go on vacation and you bring your cat along in the car a carrier is a must have.
  • Natural Disasters: If a the area you live in gets hit by a tornado, hurricane or flood having a carrier can mean all the difference in getting your cat to safety.
  • Adopting/Purchasing A Cat: If you’re acquiring a new feline friend bringing your own carrier along is a bonus! I of course recommend adopting a cat from a shelter or the city pound, but your own carrier is a bonus even if you’re purchasing your cat from a breeder too!
  • A Safe Spot For Your Cat: While this may seem counter intuitive because most cats are known to dislike carriers, if you do it right a cat carrier can be considered a very safe and relaxing spot for your cat. Many carriers are snug, warm, comfortable and they also provide protection from multiple sides so nothing can approach your cat without being seen. These are all key things cats look for in a place to sleep or a place to hide if they need one.
  • What Types of Cat Carriers Are There?

There are several different kinds of carriers on the market and each one has perks and drawbacks.  Below I’ve given a high level description of each of the major types. Further down you’ll find a high level comparison of the major benefits of each different type of carrier and the potential shortcomings as well.

    Cardboard Carriers:

The most common place you’ll find a cardboard carrier is at an adoption center or an animal shelter. Cardboard carriers are meant to be a very temporary solution to get your cat from the adoption center to your home. This should definitely not be considered a permanent solution for a laundry list of reasons, but the biggest two are that cardboard carriers are flimsy and they aren’t comfortable to hold.

One additional item to consider is that they don’t provide a great deal of ventilation which is key for any carrier and you can’t simply open a small portion of the carrier because the whole top is the only entry/exit point. To reiterate, you should only use this in unique circumstances.

    Hard Carriers:

Hard carriers are probably the most common carrier around. They are generally made of a combination of plastic and metal. The frame itself is usually plastic with the door being made of a lightweight metal.  Hard carriers are very firm and provide a nice secure surface/place for your cat to travel.

The biggest concern with hard carriers is that they aren’t very comfortable to travel with (for the human!), even short distances. They typically have one big handle on the top and that is the only way to hold or move the carrier. This can make them irritating if you have to move your cat a long distance because hard carriers are typically heavier and they’ll be banging against your hips or legs with every step. One other thing that always freaks me out from a safety standpoint is I worry the handle will give and rip the top off letting the cat out while I’m outside.

    Soft Sided Carriers:

Soft sided carriers are probably the second most common type of carriers, hard plastic carriers being the most common. Soft sided carriers are traditionally made of nylon or some derivation of it which makes them flexible and lightweight. They also usually have a solid set of short straps for easy carrying directly in your hand, but more importantly they have a larger and longer shoulder strap to let the weight rest instead of actively having to hold it up. This means they are a heck of a lot easier for you as an owner to carry around.

Generally soft sided carriers are comfortable for cats as well because they come with in included pad or piece of lambswool to stick inside on the bottom. Soft sided carriers come with all sorts of other features to make them better for different kinds of travel, for example the one on the left has fold down covers for the vents so you can help minimize outside sensory overload for your cat at stressful times.

There are also soft carriers that have cool features like pop out sides to expand the size of the carrier when it is stationary.  They are also great for storage purposes because they break down easily, many completely collapse in on themselves into a flat pancake style setup.

Soft carriers aren’t perfect by any means though. One key thing to keep in mind is that since they aren’t made of firm materials they can leave your cat to bounce around/dip up and down quite a bit as you move which might result in an unhappy cat or a motion sick cat. Be sure to check how firm the bottom is before purchase.

    Backpack Carriers:

Backpack carriers are definitely somewhat of a novelty in the market right now, they are a variation on soft sided carriers. You can find all different sorts of them from ones that have a single bubble window on the back so your cat can see out to full on ‘soft style’ carriers with backpack straps so you can more easily hold your cat and walk around with them.  If you have trouble with the standard single shoulder strap on the soft carrier this might be a good option for you to consider, but be sure to get one with good ventilation.

Check out our full roundup of backpack carriers here.

Another common use for backpack style carriers is for adventure cats. Adventure cats are those types of cats that are commonly out in the open following their owner around on foot during hikes and walks (usually on a harness/leash).  The backpack carrier is a great spot to deposit your feline friend if a less than ideal situation appears that could endanger your kitty.

    Suitcase/Stroller Carriers:

Rolling carriers are generally another variation on soft sided carriers, on wheels. Rolling carriers were developed for folks that have difficulty carrying heavy objects around. Given that some of our cats these days are getting in the area of 20 lbs or more (I’m looking at you Maine Coon owners!) they can be pretty tough to lug around on a single shoulder strip.  Rolling carriers tend to be a bit larger than a traditional soft carrier and they also take away the strain of carrying the cat yourself by laying all the weight on the wheels just like a rolling suitcase.

My biggest gripe with these kinds of carriers is that the wheels are often tiny so they get stuck easily on pavement. On top of this the wheels are often made of plastic instead of rubber to keep things cheaper and this makes a ton of noise when you roll it. Most cats aren’t a fan of being in the carrier to begin with, loud noises don’t help with keeping them calm.

What Type of Carrier Is Right For Me?

There’s no single right answer to this question. The right carrier for you and your furry friend is going to be different than the one I choose.  We all have different priorities and different cats too. I live downtown and I walk my cats to the vet, but other than that they hardly leave the house. This leads me to use a soft sided carrier because it is easy to throw the single strap over my shoulder and walk, but it also breaks down super easily and can be stowed away in my closet.

You might on the other hand need a carrier that fits a much larger cat that mine and your kitty might be less relaxed when traveling so more likely to claw the sides of the carrier. You might even have a cat that gets sick really easily during transport. This might lead you to a hard carrier for ease of cleaning.

So instead of me trying to pick the best carrier for you, let’s get you educated on picking the right carrier for yourself and your situation. These are the major areas of consideration you should keep in mind when selecting a carrier for yourself and your cat. I’ve put them in order of importance as well, primarily focused on the comfort and happiness of your cat:

  • Size:
    • Be sure that your carrier is the appropriate size for your cat.  Your cat should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down easily in the carrier.  The picture to the right is of my foster cat Buzz in the carrier for my tiny cat Beast. While he can lay down in the carrier he certainly can’t stand in it comfortably.  This carrier is not a great fit for Buzz.
    • If you’re going further than simply the vet’s office you should also ensure your cat can have a meal and drink inside. The key thing you want to avoid is a super large carrier as a smaller space feels more secure for your cat, especially in an unfamiliar environment like in a plane or in a car.
  • Sturdiness / Durability:
    • A hard carrier is far more durable than any soft carrier. It has a firm floor/base that won’t move or give at all for your cat which is reassuring from a security standpoint.  Soft carriers typically have some give to them which can scare your cat while you are carrying it.
    • If you’re unsure on the specific carrier then drop a few heavy objects in it in the pet store and walk around with it on your shoulder to see how it reacts. If the carrier seems really flimsy for a cat of your size definitely find something else.
  • Ventilation:
    • Your cat wants and needs plenty of ventilation.  I’ve seen several backpack type carriers that only have one tiny little vent on them. This can be extremely dangerous for your cat, especially in hot weather. Ensure you have lots of vents and make sure your cat isn’t left in a carrier in hot weather for long periods of time!
    • Note a lot of carriers also have vents that can be covered/uncovered in different types of situations. These are ideal for helping minimize your cats reactions to outside forces. Most of this simply snap over the vents and are very easy to pop off.
  • Ease of Carrying / Transporting:
    • Make your selection depending on where you’re going and how you’re getting there.
    • I have generally found a soft sided carrier is the easiest from a transport perspective, but I have two lightweight cats and neither of them are terribly afraid of the carrier nor do they go very far.
    • If you constantly walk long distance with your cat then a backpack soft sided carrier might be ideal, but if you have difficulty with heavy objects you might want to instead consider a rolling carrier.
    • The only major caution I’ll call out here is that while hard sided carriers do provide excellent protection and a great safe space for your cat they can be a huge hassle to carry anything more than short distances. They tend to be heavier than soft carriers and you can’t rest the weight on your shoulders.
  • Side & Top Openings:
    • Some carriers, particularly the hard carriers, tend to have only one opening at the front.  Many adult cats have already learned that the carrier means a trip to the vet and they’ll struggle to go into the carrier. This can result in all sorts of scratches and sometimes even bites with a cat that is very against the trip.  I would aim to get a carrier with at least the front and top opening because placing a cat in from the top is often easier.
  • Ease of Cleaning:
    • Hard carriers are by far the easiest to clean.  Since they are plastic you can basically pop everything out of them and simply spray them out or wipe them down with a wet rag.  This is ideal if you have a cat that gets motion sickness easily while traveling.
    • Softer carriers usually have a removable bottom that can be wiped down or tossed in the washing machine, but the carrier itself normally has something like a thin piece of plastic or cardboard inside the jacket that can’t be removed. This means throwing it in the washing machine can be a hassle and cleaning nylon behind isn’t terribly easy.
  • Storage Space:
    • Soft carriers are typically very easy to break down and store in a very small space. This is a nice perk if you’re in the city or simply have limited space no matter where you live.
    • Hard carriers can typically be broken down, but they usually end up in multiple pieces that can be easily lost or misplaced and they still tend to take up more vertical space as the parts don’t ‘stack’ perfectly.
    • Suitcase & Stroller style carriers are probably the worst from a space standpoint as just like a stroller for a child they can only break down so far.
  • What Are The Airline & Train Requirements?

The requirements for each airline and each train company are slightly different, but below I've provided some overview details for each of the major airlines in the United States. If you happen to be traveling on another airline then you'll have to take a look yourself.

You can usually find Google "[airline name] in cabin pets" for more details. Or check the table below for standard specs. Note some planes on some airlines are unique, so click the links for more details:

    • American Airlines — 18 × 11 × 11 (soft-sided); 19 × 13 × 9 (hard-sided)
    • Delta — 18 × 11 × 11 (soft-sided recommended; this is Delta's stated "fits most aircraft" size)
    • United — 18 × 11 × 11 (soft-sided); 17.5 × 12 × 9 (hard-sided)
    • Southwest — 18.5 × 13.5 × 9.5 (most generous of the five, same limit for soft and hard carriers)
    • Alaska Airlines — 17 × 11 × 9.5 (soft-sided; smallest allowance of the five)

These are each airline's general published max, but actual under-seat clearance still varies by specific aircraft type, and a couple of secondary sources disagreed slightly on Southwest's height (9.5" vs. 8.5") and United's hard-sided depth — worth a direct confirm against the airline's own current pages before you fly.

We cover the general version of this question in a lot more depth in our Cat Bubble Backpacks Q&A, so if you want the fuller breakdown of why under-seat space varies so much, start there.

How do I know if a carrier will actually fit my cat?

This is the single biggest source of buyer confusion in this whole category, and it's not close. Almost every carrier on this list gets a split reaction from owners — some say it's roomy, others say the exact same carrier felt too small — and that's not really a contradiction, it just means cats vary a lot more than a single marketed size class accounts for. Before you buy, measure your actual cat: length from nose to the base of the tail, height from the floor to the top of their shoulder while standing, and their weight.

Compare those numbers against the carrier's actual interior dimensions in the listing, not just the size label in the title (a "Large" or "for 2 cats" tag doesn't guarantee your particular cat will be comfortable inside). A carrier that looks roomy in the product photos can still feel snug the moment a real, fully-grown cat is standing up and turning around in it.

Are the zippers and hardware on these carriers actually durable?

Honestly, it's mixed, and that split shows up across soft-sided and hard-sided designs alike, not just one style or one brand. Zipper quality is one of the most commonly flagged concerns across this whole roundup — some owners report years of trouble-free use, others report a zipper pull breaking off or the seams not feeling sturdy enough for a determined cat. Hard-sided carriers aren't automatically safer here either — even a solid-plastic design with sliding locks gets the occasional complaint about not feeling fully secure.

Our honest take: treat this as a real, category-wide trade-off rather than a reason to avoid any specific pick. Give a new carrier a firm once-over before the first real trip — test the zipper pulls, check the stitching at stress points — and expect a little more wear over time on the lower-priced options specifically.

My cat refuses to get in — is there a design that actually helps?

Yes, and it usually comes down to how the carrier opens rather than anything else about it. Our SportPet hard-sided pick earns its spot largely because of this — it's built around a wide side-opening door specifically so you're not forcing a cat through a narrow front opening they can see and brace against.

If your cat is the type to plant all four paws and refuse to go in through the front, a side-load or top-load design is usually the easier fight to win, since you're working with gravity and a wider opening instead of pushing against a scared cat head-on. A front-loading-only carrier tends to be the toughest style for a reluctant cat, simply because they can see the whole ordeal coming and have the most room to resist.

What's actually involved in setting up a rolling cat carrier?

Less than it might look like in the product photos. Our rolling pick's aggregate owner feedback consistently describes it as easy to put together and take apart — mainly attaching or detaching the wheeled base and folding the carrier flat when you're not using it, not a full tool-based build. One honest thing worth knowing before you buy this style specifically: once you pop the carrier off the wheeled base, the bottom loses its firm support and can sag a bit under your cat's weight, so it's really designed to be used on its wheels rather than carried by hand for any real distance.

Can a carrier marketed for two cats actually fit two cats comfortably?

It depends heavily on the size of your cats, which ties right back into the measuring advice above. Our multi-cat pick is explicitly marketed and sized for two cats sharing the space, and its aggregate owner feedback does back that up — plenty of owners say it's genuinely spacious enough for two. But given how often "roomy vs. too small" feedback splits across this entire category, we'd treat "fits 2 cats" as true for two kittens or two smaller-to-average adult cats rather than assuming it's true for any two cats regardless of size.

Measure both cats individually, not just the smaller of the two, and remember that even a carrier with enough physical square footage only works well for two cats who are actually bonded and comfortable sharing a small space — two cats who tolerate each other but wouldn't choose to cuddle up together may still stress each other out in a shared carrier no matter how much room is technically available.

    Wrapping It Up

So let’s close things up with a quick recap:

    • There are a bunch of reasons you should have a good quality carrier available for your cat
    • There are numerous kinds of carriers out there, each type has pros and cons & you should select on based on your needs
    • A cardboard carrier should not be considered a long term solution
    • Be sure to associate your cats carrier with positive things like treats or meal time, this will make them less likely to balk at going into it when it is necessary
